**Amelia’s POV**

A sense of satisfaction washed over me after I had put Claire in her place, a fleeting victory that was quickly overshadowed by the reality awaiting me. As I approached the lab, a chill crept down my spine when I discovered the door firmly locked. Eve was conspicuously absent from the hallway, but I could hear muffled voices drifting from within. She had to be in there.

Why on earth was the door locked?

The memory of being trapped in the dark confines of the records room surged back, a ghostly reminder of past fears. Thankfully, this time, I had Cara by my side. With her presence, I felt a surge of confidence; no one would dare lock me away again.

I rapped my knuckles against the door, the sound echoing in the silence that followed.

After a brief pause, a nurse finally appeared, swinging the door open with a laugh. “Oh, how silly of me! I didn’t realize I locked it when I closed the door.”

For a moment, I considered giving her the benefit of the doubt. Accidents do happen, after all, and she had responded quickly enough to spare us both a lengthy wait.

But then, she extended a folder towards me, and just as I reached out, she released it. Papers fluttered to the ground like fallen leaves, scattering across the floor.

“How clumsy,” she remarked, her tone devoid of the earlier lightheartedness. Her grin was now unsettlingly smug, lacking any hint of genuine remorse. Instead of helping, she simply stepped over the mess and continued on her way, leaving me to gather the pieces of our disrupted conversation.

“Hey!” Cara called after her, her voice tinged with indignation.

“I’m too busy to help you,” the nurse replied dismissively, waving her hand as if shooing away a pesky fly.

I knelt down, my heart racing with frustration as I collected the scattered papers. Cara joined me, her presence a comforting reminder that I wasn’t alone in this. Together, we worked in silence, restoring order to the chaos.
