Benedict, The Alpha King’s POV

Damien’s blatant disrespect combined with Jake’s disobedience rankled all my nerves, Jake perhaps worse than Damien. Damien had always been a bit of a wild card, but Jake was my nephew. He wasn’t just breaking the trust of his King, but of his family as well.

Perhaps, because of this, I shouldn’t have been surprised when, on my way out of the hall, having sent Damien back to the dungeons until I could decide what to do with him, my brother Martin, Jake’s father, hurried to try to speak with me privately.

“Benedict, please. A word,” he said.

As pissed as I was at Martin’s side of the family, he was still my brother. Unlike his ungrateful son, family meant something to me.

“This way,” I told my brother and stepped to the side of the hallway to hear him out. By not inviting him to a sitting room, I was indicating to him that this would be a short conversation. If he had something to say to me, he had better say what he needed to say and quickly.

“Brother, I am not trying to undermine you in any way,” Martin began, not a great start. “But I must implore you to reconsider your decisions here. You were too harsh on Amelia, and now on Damien, who only wanted to protect his mate, the mother of us unborn child -”

“Is that all you wish to say to me?”

“Amelia is not a witch. If you would only talk to her -”

“An impossible task now, isn’t it?” I said. “Because of your son and the man in my prison. And you want me to, what? Reward that level of disrespect? What Damien and Jake have done is treason, Martin. And if you continue to try to interfere, the same accusation might fall onto you as well. Be careful.”

Martin paled a little, but persisted. “You are going too far, Benedict.”

“Perhaps I have not gone far enough,” I replied, and decided then and there that I would need to have Damien killed, if only to set an example to everyone else. To release him or to be lenient would only paint me as a weak king. I could not allow that to happen. “Leave brother. You are trying my patience.”

Martin smartly backed up a few steps, before turning to leave these halls. With him gone, I continued to trek a bit further into my palace, annoyed when another voice stopped me.

“Alpha King.” This time it was Sienna, my niece.

Seeing her eased some of my frustration. After all, without her warning, I might have found myself caught in the witch Amelia’s snare. Because of Sienna, I had known to keep Amelia at a distance, though even that had almost not been enough. Even with the space of my hall between us, I had felt somewhat compelled to treat her kindly.

While I might have been skeptical of Sienna before – after all, witches hadn’t been seen in the werewolf realm in hundreds of years – having seen the way Damien, Jake, and Martin acted on Amelia’s behalf, I was now more convinced than ever that Sienna was right and Amelia was indeed a witch.

“Thank you,” Sienna said, tears welling in her eyes. “You were the only one to truly listen to me and my worries. For so long, I’ve watched that witch take over my family. And now… I wish I could tell you I can’t believe Jake betrayed his entire pack for her, but I am not. It was only the natural progression of things. Her influence over him was so great…”

“We will find them, dear niece. Do not fret. And when we do, we will bring the witch to justice.”

I was determined to put down this witch before she further influenced my kingdom. Unfortunately, that also meant it would be too late for those she had bewitched. Jake, like Damien, would need to be killed as well.

A sorrowful end for otherwise strong Alphas. This witch had to be strong to bring them so low.

“Have no fear,” I told my niece. “We will end that witch and stop her reign of terror.”

Jake’s POV

Admittedly, aside from getting Amelia out of the capital and to a doctor, I hadn’t planned too far ahead. Now that I’d accomplished both things, I wasn’t really sure where to go next.

Alpha King Benedict had a fair reach. His kingdom covered most of the continent, and while I was confident of my skills in avoiding him myself, it became much more complicated with a pregnant Amelia in tow, especially as her pregnancy was so complicated. Especially because she was a human and couldn’t shift.

Without the ability to become a wolf, that meant we were stuck with external means of transportation. I could try to rent a car, or maybe we could sneak onto the train…

And go where? The towns outside of the kingdom weren’t known for their welcoming nature. In fact, they were hostile enough to keep the King from pushing for their takeover and addition to his kingdom.

I doubted we would find any solace there.

Watching over Amelia, I deeply sighed. She had woken when the doctor arrived to check on her, but was back to sleeping now. I wasn’t going to wake her for her thoughts. She needed her rest to face the challenge of the travel

to come.

If only I had some idea where to go…

Taking her back to my pack would only endanger them. With regret, I knew I wouldn’t be able to go back there no matter what. Wherever we were going, it had to be somewhere new.

Frustrated, I stood up and walked out of the room in search of a fresh cup of coffee. Maybe some caffeine would help clear my mind.

Along the way, an idea struck through me.

Escaping the Alpha King would be difficult, especially if we stayed in the werewolf realm. But what if we didn’t?

The Alpha King’s reach did not extend to the human realm. Perhaps returning Amelia to her homeland was the best thing for her. She would be mostly safe there. Her pregnancy might be an issue, but… perhaps, in time, I could find a way to sneak Dr. Wyatt to her.

Firstly, Amelia herself had to escape. The rest could come later.

The coffee pot was on a counter near the nurses’ station. The nurses there didn’t seem to notice as I lifted the carafe to fill my cup.

“I’m telling you,” one of the nurses said to the other, “I don’t think they are really brother and sister.”

“You are being paranoid.”

“Am I? They both came here under suspicious circumstances, unable to produce ID. We should have just turned them away.”
