Chapter 154
Amelia’s POV
The urgency in Jake’s voice made my adrenaline spike, eliminating any lingering remnants of sleep from within
Jake turned, switching off the heart monitor as I pulled the sensors from my chest. At the same time, I carefully removed the IV line from my arm.
Stepping out of bed, Jake held out his hand for me to take. Quickly, I put my hand in his, trusting Jake with my life.
We hurried forward. At the door, he poked his head out, looking left and right, before tugging me out behind him.
I followed along as best I could, but I was feeling self-conscious in my hospital gown. I held it closed in the back with my free hand, but I was very aware of my pantsless state. And I’d be extra noticeable if we went outside with me dressed like this.
That kind of scene would draw the kind of unwanted attention we were trying to avoid. If the guards would become involved, undoubtedly we would be arrested and sent back to the Alpha King.
“Jake…” I whispered, as we hurried toward the exit.
“We’re almost out,” he said.
“But I need pants,” I said.
He paused and looked back at me in confusion. Then he looked down as if noticing for the first time that my legs were bare.
He cursed lightly under his breath.
At the same time, we could hear footsteps coming down the hallway. Again he cursed, then after looking around, picked a closed door, opened it, and pulled me through. He closed the door behind us just in time. Beyond the wall, we heard footsteps going down the hallway.
Looking back, I realized we were in a storage room. In this room were several clear plastic bags, each stapled closed with a tag that was marked with a patient’s name. Their belongings? I searched for my own name – or, well, Jean – but couldn’t find my things.
“Pick something,” Jake whispered. “They’ll notice us missing soon. We have to be gone before they do.”
I hated the thought of stealing clothes from someone else, but I didn’t have much time to lose.
“Do you have any cash?” I asked Jake.
“What?” he asked me.
“If I’m going to take something, I’m going to leave money for them to be able to buy something else.” I didn’t like the idea of taking something. What if the person I took it from didn’t have the means to buy many things? I couldn’t live with myself.
Jake huffed a breath, so he seemed bemused. Digging his wallet out of his back pocket, he passed over a couple of twenty dollar bills. I grabbed one of the bags that seemed to have clothes and tore it open. Inside I found a pair of pants and a flannel top. After making Jake turn his back, I quickly changed. The clothes were ill-fitting, far too bit, but they would do – especially when I found a belt in the bag as well.
I placed the twenties into the bag, then turned to Jake. His back was still facing me.

“I’m ready,” I told him.
“Let’s go,” he said and tugged me through the door again.
We moved carefully, but swiftly, hiding whenever we heard someone come close. When we reached the front of the clinic though, with the reception desk and the waiting room, we had no choice but to pass by people.
“Just look confident,” Jake said. “No one will even think about us.”
I hoped that was true. Clinging onto his hand tightly, I held my breath.
Together, we walked out of the hallway and through the waiting room. The receptionist looked over at us curiously, but soon, a waiting patient pulled her attention away by asking a question.
Our good luck held, and we walked through the waiting room without notice. When we reached outside, I thought to take a breath of relief but Jake only continued pulling me along.
We walked at a swift but steady pace all the way to the other side of down. There, we finally stopped to rest at a gas station.
There was a bench out front. I was feeling winded from the fast pace so I sat down for a moment. Jake, realizing I need a break, sat down beside me.
For a moment, I allowed myself to breathe. Then, I looked over at Jake, and caught sight of the worry clear on his profile. When he saw me watching, he schooled his face into something more stoic. But it was too late, I already witnessed his concern.
“Jake,” I said softly. “Where are we going? When the Alpha King finds out I’m gone, he’s not going to just let us go. We have to hide somewhere.”
“I’ve already given this some thought, Amelia,” he said. “And I’ve decided that the only place truly safe for you is your home back in the human realm.”
“The human realm?”
“You’ll be safe there,” Jake said. “The Alpha King won’t chase you there. But you’ll have to stay there, okay? You can’t come back to the werewolf realm or he’ll just capture you again.’
})
“And what about you, or Damien? You expect me to just go quietly and leave you both behind?”
“You have to,” Jake said. “It’s the only way you will be safe.”
“I’m not doing that,” I snapped, growing angry now. How could he think I would just turn my back on everyone? Damien could be in trouble, and I -”
“Damien purposefully put himself in harm’s way to keep you out of it,” Jake replied, his voice shortening too. “If you stay here, if you are captured, than what he’s done for you will have been done in vain. You have to respect his wishes, Amelia. You have to keep pushing forward and get yourself to safety.”
“I don’t agree with that,” I said. “You all keep making decisions for me, but I –
“Do you forget that you were in a dungeon? Is that where you want to go back to? Where you want to raise your child?”
“No, but…”
I needed time to think. This was all too much. Now he wanted me to just run away? But I wanted to help! I didn’t know how but…
