Chapter 159
Amelia’s POV
Damien was preparing for a bloody fight. That much was clear from his terse posture and the aura of malice radiating off of him in waves. Even I, a human, could feel the shiver of fear at the fury his very body seemed to be releasing into the air around him.
As pleased I was to see that he was willing to fight again, I couldn’t allow things to progress like this.
Damien, strong as he was, had little hope of winning against the entirety of the king’s guard. And even if he did, paving a way for our escape, we would only continue to be hunted even worse than before.
Right now, Damien had killed a prisoner who had been threatening me to save me. The man had been convicted and sent to the dungeons, where his mind had turned him crazed.
If Damien were to start killing guards, no one would ever be willing to take mercy on him, even if he had done so for my sake. We needed the public on our side if we wanted to survive this.
“Wait!” I shouted. I pushed at Damien, trying to get him to let me pass, but he was like a brick wall, refusing to move. His strength outmatched mine a million to one. If he didn’t want to let me by, I wouldn’t get by.
So I shouted louder, “Alpha King! Please! Hear me out!”
The Alpha King looked at me from his throne. With Damien in the way, he could just barely see me overtop of Damien’s shoulder.
When our eyes met, he stilled a moment. Then he lifted his hand, “Stop!” he called to his guards.
The glanced back at him, seemingly confused, but they ultimately obeyed orders, stilling in their tracks and approaching us no further.
Damien didn’t relax. In fact, he only seemed more agitated with the Alpha King now scrutinizing me.
“Step forward, young lady,” the Alpha King said.
“Like hell,” Damien growled, his voice rough, his vocal chords already beginning to shift into werewolf form.
I didn’t know why, I had no reason to assume everything would be okay, but I felt something in my gut. Looking at the Alpha King, a strange sort of feeling came over me, vaguely similar to what I felt when I met Jake and his
parents.
I almost felt like I could trust him somehow, even if that didn’t really make sense. He’d already locked me in a dungeon once. I had no reason to think that would be any different this time.
Yet still, I found myself telling Damien, “It’s going to be okay.” And I still stepped around him to walk closer to the Alpha King.
Damien moved too, staying in my shadow. He towered over me, protecting me like a bodyguard. I felt his looming presence more than saw it, ever grateful for the comfort that it gave me.
Even with all of our problems, I still drew strength from our mating bond. At least in times like these, matters of life and death, he gave me the courage I needed to face the man who held our lives and our futures in his hands.
“You wished to speak,” the Alpha King said. “So… speak.”
I lowered my head, unsure exactly what you were supposed to do as a show of respect with royals in the werewolf realm. Then, I started speaking.

“Damien is blameless in all of this. I… I have placed him under a spell that has been making him act this way. Else he would be fully loyal to you, your… uh… majesty.”
“Amelia,” Damien shushed me. “You are lying.”
I turned my head to whisper back at him. “I am saving you.”
“But who will save you when you are labeled a witch?” he growled.
