Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 164

Chapter 164

Damien’s POV

I needed to get ahead of this situation, and fast, before the rumor mill got out of control in such a way that would reflect badly on Amelia. I had my pride, and didn’t want to be labeled a playboy when I had only ever been a committed husband. But more than that, I didn’t want any of this negative attention to fall on Amelia.

“I will remind you, Claire, as well as inform anyone else who may be listening, that your child was not conceived the natural way,” I said loudly. “In fact, we’ve never had sex. I’ve always been faithful to Amelia.”

“What?” Jake said, taken aback. He wasn’t the only one as several confused and shocked faces littered the crowd.

“In fact,” I continued. “You need to stop talking to your Alpha that way. The way you act, like a Luna, is despicable. You have never been nor will ever be my Luna. That role has always and forever belonged to Amelia. There will never be anyone else.”

Claire’s face went carefully blank, showing no emotion or movement except for the twitch of her eyebrow.

“The child was made with scientific means?” Jake asked. “Is that the truth?”

I looked at him. “Why is it so hard for everyone to believe that I love my wife?”

“But her pain… Cara said that her pain was because of -”

“I don’t know why she’s been feeling that pain, but it had nothing to do with anything I did,” I said. Looking over at Victoria, I said, “Tell him, Sis. Tell him that the whole pack knows Claire’s child was not made naturally, and that she was only chosen because of her strong werewolf genes that would be good for an heir, not any romantic reasons.”

Victoria looked at Claire and then the ground. “It’s true,” Victoria said. “Everyone in the pack knows that Damien’s heart belongs to Amelia, our Luna.” Victoria looked back up then, fire in her eyes. “But Claire’s child is the future heir! Even if Claire… well…”

Claire glared at her friend. “Say it,” she snapped.

Victoria stared down at the ground. “Even if you will never be Luna.”

Claire hissed, “Traitor.”

“You truly can’t account for the mating bond pain?” Jake asked, unwilling to let this go.

“I can’t,” I said, “But I have Dr. Wyatt searching into it. The minute we have some answers, I’m hoping we can find a solution that will help heal her.”

Jake held my gaze for a long moment, as if trying to size me up. He broke that gaze to glance at Claire for a moment and then back to me.

“Regardless of whether you are physically sleeping with Claire,” Jake said, “You made a choice, it seems, to have an heir with her, rather than your wife. Perhaps that’s not infidelity, but it is certainly a choice that you made, one where you picked another woman over your wife.”

How could he be so callous? As an Alpha, Jake knew the ways of the werewolf world, and he should have recognized that the pack came before all else, even personal choice. Plus, as Amelia was a human, I never expected, despite her treatments, that she would actually conceive.

Perhaps I was in the wrong for doubting her. I could see that now.

But at the time, I had thought I’d made the best choice for my pack.

“Damien, if you truly expect to win Amelia back, you will need to correct this mistake. Put Claire and her child aside and focus on your wife. It’d be better if you disown Claire,” Jake said.

“Hold your tongue!” Claire snapped.

“Mind your place,” Jake snapped back. “You aren’t the Luna, yet you speak to Alphas as though you are welcome among us. You aren’t. You are an intruder.”

Claire looked at me with annoyance, like she expected me to stand up for her. I didn’t.

In fact, as Jake’s words seeped into my mind, I began to wonder if maybe he was right. Maybe I did make a choice in the past. Even if I had been faithful of heart, I had still betrayed my wife by putting another above her, in importance within the pack, and perhaps, in that moment, in my life.
