Chapter 165

As I mulled over the words, unsure of what path to walk down, I was surprised when a voice called out.

“You’re here!”

I thought myself dreaming at first. That voice sounded like Amelia’s.

“Amelia?” Jake gasped, which was how I knew it was real instead. I looked up and there she was, walking toward us with no guard, no shackles.

“Amelia?” I said, also in disbelief.

Jake and I seemed to move at once, rushing closer to Amelia. We both looked her over, circling her, looking for injury or discomfort. She humored us, standing still so that we could inspect her.

“I’m fine,” she said. “I’m not hurt. Alpha King Benedict and I just had a chat, that’s all. It wasn’t terrible.”

“I’m glad to hear you say that, Amelia,” the Alpha King said as he too walked into the courtyard.

On reflex, I hurried to place myself between Amelia and the king, not wanting him to hurt her. His expression was calmer than his previous fury.

How could his opinion change so quickly?

Wildly, I glanced back at Amelia. She couldn’t actually be a witch… right?

“What?” she asked, looking at me.

No, that couldn’t be. It was just so strange.

“After the interview,” the Alpha King said. “I have decided that Amelia is not a witch. She is simply a woman with an honest and kind heart.”

“No!” cried another voice. From behind the fountain, Jake’s sister Sienna appeared, her face stricken and pale. ” She got to you too! She had too!”

“Hold your tongue, Sienna,” Jake said quickly.

“But -”

“You should listen to your brother, child,” the Alpha King said, glaring at his niece. “One more word and I will have you exiled from the kingdom.”

Wisely, in perhaps the smartest move of her life, she finally shut up. Her face screamed what her voice could not, though. She now believed the Alpha King as bewitched, just as she thought Jake and me to be.

The only way Amelia had bewitched me was through my love for her. It had nothing to do with magic, and everything to do with affection.

The Alpha King continued glaring at Sienna for a long moment, almost as if daring her to speak again out of turn. She wrapped her arms around her waist, lowered her head, and didn’t speak again.

“Now,” the Alpha King said, returning his attention to the rest of us. “Amelia is free and has negotiated for the freedom of you two Alphas as well. But the issue remains, to which home does she return?”

Ah. Yes. With everything else aside, the whole point we had come here was in the light now.

“I can prove that I haven’t been unfaithful,” Damien said.

“That may be so, Damien,” the Alpha King said. “But I’m leaving it up to Amelia now, where she would like to return.”

Amelia’s POV

Before Damien almost died for me, I would have chosen to go back with Jake without any thought whatsoever. But that selfless action changed some things. Now, I couldn’t help but wonder if Damien and I could make a future with each other somehow.

It would take time and work, but…

My gaze slid to Claire, who watched me with cold eyes, while she held her hands over her body.
