“At least think about it,” Jake said.

That, I could promise, even though my mind was mostly already made up. “I promise to think about it,” I said, sadly, and looked away. “But I won’t make any decision until after the baby is born, in case there are complications that human medicine can’t fix.”

“Of course,” Jake said, and there was a touch of hesitation in his voice too, mirroring my own uncertainty.

Even though it was his idea, it seemed as if the thought made him as sad as it did me.

Claire’s POV

The minute the car arrived back in Damien’s pack, and I stepped foot on land again, I immediately summoned my brother. I didn’t know how much time I had before Damien would make his decision to exile me known, and I needed to move quickly to get ahead of it.

That meant convincing my brother of the wrongness of the situation before Damien had time to talk to him, to counter whatever I might try to say.

In my house, I paced back and forth in the living room, feeling unbelievably restless, maybe more so than I ever had in my life before this moment.

How could everything fall apart so spectacularly?

I had so many plans, so carefully crafted. I just wanted that human and her whelp out of our lives for good so that I could make Damien my husband and be the Luna of this pack. Per my lineage, it was my right. It should have always been me from the start, and it would have been if Damien hadn’t made that impulsive trip to the human realm and found that bitch.

Yet, somehow, it all came crashing down. Now, not only was I sidelined in favor of a human, I was being exiled from the pack that my family had helped build. My reputation? Ruined. My future? Bleak. All because of Damien’s unhealthy infatuation with someone he never should have met to begin with.

I lost track of time so didn’t notice how much had passed before my brother finally arrived at the house.

“Claire,” Ethan said, approaching me with concern in his face. “I was told it was urgent. What’s going on?”

Oh, good. If he was asking that, then he hadn’t heard of Damien’s decision yet. That meant I still had a chance to twist things in my favor.

“A lot has happened in the capital,” I said.

“I heard Damien was cleared. Are you okay?” he asked. “Is the baby okay?”

“The baby and I are fine,” I said. “But… Amelia has continued to twist Damien’s mind. And now, it seems, she has twisted the Alpha King as well. Everyone continues to take her side, and I’m the one who suffers from it the most.”

“What are you talking about?” Ethan asked, his brow knitting together. “Claire, tell me directly what has happened.”

I took an unsteady breath. “After my baby is born, Damien plans to exile me,” I said, the words still hurting.

Ethan’s eyes went wide.

“Amelia’s influence, of course. She wants him for herself and sees me as competition. To curry her favor, I’m being sent to live in squalor.”

“That’s not fair,” Ethan said.

“It’s not,” I said. Meeting his eyes, I told him. “You have a choice now, brother. Where do your loyalties truly lie? The cards have been dealt and you need to decide where you stand.”

“I’m the pack Beta…” he said weakly.
