Chapter 173
The examination went quickly and seemingly well. Dr. Wyatt didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary, though she did withdraw some blood to test for possible invisible problems.
Yet, when she extracted the vials from her bag, the injections that I feared so much, my entire body went stiff, remembering the pain from the last time I had taken these shots.
“These shouldn’t hurt you,” Dr. Wyatt said. “I’m sure it’s the right thing this time. I placed the items in my bag, and double checked the labels before I left.”
I wanted to trust her, but I still braced myself as she prepared the needle and stuck my arm. Yet, as Dr. Wyatt pinched the needle and the liquid entered my arm, the pain never followed this time.
Like the times before the last, the injection did not hurt more than the typical prick of the needle to my skin.
In relief, I exhaled and sunk back onto the medical bed.
“No pain?” she asked.
“No pain,” I confirmed.
The examination continued on in silence for a bit, though my mind continued to wander. After some quiet, I asked Dr. Wyatt, “Do you think it’s possible for a half-human, half-werewolf child to be raised in the human realm?”
Dr. Wyatt paused in her examination for a moment, before continuing. She kept her voice measured as she said, ” There might be problems as the child reaches puberty and the wolf develops, At that point, I would recommend finding a doctor familiar with werewolf anatomy to help.”
“Are there such doctors in the human realm?” I asked.
“There are,” Dr. Wyatt confirmed. “Some werewolf healers tire of the violence of the werewolf realm and retreat to the human realm for safety. They sometimes disappear without a trace, but many leave contacts in case they are needed. I can try to get information for one for you.
“Thank you,” I said. “Though I haven’t decided anything yet.”
“Keep me in the loop,” she said. “I will do whatever I can to help you.”
Later, after returning the estate, Jake admitted his relief, “I was tense the entire time I stood outside the examination room. I was ready to burst in at any moment.”
“It wasn’t so bad this time,” I said. “In fact, I was able to talk to the doctor about some of what we had talked about, with the human realm and –”
My own voice cut off, and I heard a sharp wailing noise. I blinked and I was on the ground.
Another blink, and I realized that noise was coming from me.
What was happening? This pain was even worse than before! I felt like my whole body was on fire.
I reached a shaky hand out to Jake. He was kneeling over me, his hands reaching but uncertain where to touch. His face was panicked.
I didn’t quite touch his hand before I passed out.

Not knowing what else to do, I grabbed Amelia, lifted her into my arms, and rushed her back to the hospital. Fortunately Dr. Wyatt was still there, not yet packed up all the way to return to Damien’s pack.
