Chapter 172
Amelia’s POV
Dr. Wyatt made it to Jake’s pack in record time. After an urgent call from Jake, I couldn’t blame her for rushing. Everyone seemed to be worried about me and the baby after what I’d gone through in the capital. I had spent the time in the clinic, but Jake seemed unconvinced I had been given the best care, as he had to keep my identity a secret. No one at the clinic knew I was human.
Now, as he was escorting me to the hospital, I sat in the backseat trembling a little.
Jake noticed right away. “What’s wrong?” he asked. “I thought you like Dr. Wyatt?”
“I do,” I told him. “But the last time I saw her… those injections… It was so painful, I don’t know if I can do it again.”
“You don’t have to,” he said.
But I did. For my baby, I did. The injections were necessary, to increase the strength of my weak human body so that I could see this pregnancy to term. If I were to refuse them now, and something were to happen to my baby, I didn’t think I’d ever be able to forgive myself.
I had to face the injections. I had to be strong. I had to suffer whatever pain necessary to ensure that my baby grew up strong and healthy. I could withstand anything. For the sake of my little girl, there was nothing I wouldn’t do.
“I have to,” I said.
Jake frowned. “I’ll stay with you. I’ll stay right outside the door. If I hear anything, I’ll stop it.”
That wasn’t the comfort he likely thought it would be. I didn’t want anyone to stop it, but now I had to endure without making a sound. My heart sank as I tried to ready myself for the torture to come.
When I met with Dr. Wyatt in the examination room, I gave her a hug. Eve had today off. While she offered to come in for my sake, I knew how rare it was for her to have a minute to relax, so I refused. Besides, even with the pain, I trusted Dr. Wyatt. I didn’t think Healer Eve needed to be here for a routine visit and checkup.
“You must have been terribly frightened,” Dr. Wyatt said, after our hug. “I could only gather what happened through some news reports, but none of it sounded good.”
“It was scary,” I admitted, as I took my place on the medical bed, ready for the examination. “But I did what I had to do.”
“I admire you for it,” Dr. Wyatt said. “They said you saved Damien’s life by coming back for him just in time. We nearly lost our Alpha. After what was happening between the two of you, I wasn’t sure…”
“I had to go back,” I said, and left it at that.
Even with my pain at the time, there were some lines that couldn’t be crossed. If there was something I could do to save someone, I would do it, especially if that person was the father of my child…
And someone I dearly loved, even if I was too afraid and too hurt to continue to admit that, or to say such a thing out loud to anyone else.
“You are such a brave girl, you could be a werewolf,” Dr. Wyatt said. “I’ve always thought so, but you continue to prove it every single day.”
“There are brave humans too,” I said.

She shook her head a little. “Forgive me. I meant it as a compliment, not to insult humans.”
