Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 176

Chapter 176

Damien’s POV

Knowing that Amelia was okay put me somewhat at ease, though I was still amped up from the danger she had been in – which I had been accused of being responsible for. My mind was a minefield of anger and possibilities as I tried to make sense of everything from my side. 1

I didn’t have enough information to truly piece things together, at least in full, especially with Dr. Wyatt gone now. But I did have a few places to start.

Someone must have taken that poison from the safe, which meant that someone close to me was betraying me.

I didn’t want to doubt anyone, but I wasn’t sure Dr. Wyatt would lie. And, after checking, the poison was missing.

But where would I even begin to search for the person who betrayed me? I didn’t want to think anyone close to me would do this, despite the evidence.

The evidence spoke to the contrary however, which meant I had to investigate.

The other thing on my mind, in addition to how Amelia had survived the poisoning was how she had survived. I had a nagging suspicion in my mind that Amelia survived this not because of our child protecting her, but because she might have a supernatural secret, something that she didn’t know about.

The idea stuck in my mind. Maybe it was easier to think about than the possible betrayal, but I found myself consumed by the idea.

At this point, I was searching on the internet for how hidden werewolf traits might manifest themselves in those previously thought of as humans. In addition, I looked up percentages and stories about werewolves living unknowingly as humans in the human realm.

It had been known to happen. It wasn’t terribly popular, but it wasn’t entirely unheard of either.

Amelia had been an orphan. Was it possible she had been taken across the realms as a baby? Could she truly be a werewolf after all?

Maybe it was unlikely. It was probably just wishful thinking. But I simply could not get the idea out of my mind.

As I was looking up information, Victoria came to my office and knocked on the door. I really didn’t want to talk to her about anything, but… she was still my sister, despite our differences. So I waved her inside.

She walked in and sat down in one of the seats opposite the desk.

Still consumed with my search, I continued to look through the websites on human-werewolf traits.

Neither of us spoke for several long minutes. Then Victoria cleared her throat.

“Damien, I was hoping we could talk,” she said.

“I have a lot going on, Victoria,” I said.

“But it’s somewhat urgent…”

I glanced at her, away from the monitor. “What is it?”

“Claire,” she said.

Immediately, I looked back to the monitor. “I know you are friends with Claire,” I said, “And either she put you

up to speaking to me, or you feel obligated to do it. But I’m telling you now talking about this isn’t going to change anything.”

“She’s going to have a baby, Damien.”

“Which is why I’m allowing her to stay until after she gives birth and is given the okay from the doctor,” I said. “I am being as lenient as I can with her, Victoria. I wish you could see that. After what she did to Amelia…”

“So she lied about a few things-”

“Enough,” I said firmly. Victoria closed her mouth, which eliminated the need for me to press her further. Instead, my mind wandered once more and I had a new idea. “Excuse me,” I said, standing, and walked out of the office.

Nearby, I found my Beta Ethan sitting at his desk. “Ethan, I need you to do something for me, but it must be done in secret, do you understand? I don’t want anyone else to know about this, not even in this office.”

Ethan nodded. “Of course, Alpha.”

Leaning down, I dropped my voice so that only he could hear. “Go to the hospital. There, I know they have some of Amelia’s blood on file. I want the healers to test her for any werewolf genes.”

Ethan’s eyes went round. “Alpha?”

“I have suspicions she might be a werewolf,” I said. “Keep that under wraps.”

Ethan swallowed hard, but then nodded. “Yes, Alpha.”

He’d been acting a bit strangely the past few days. I couldn’t blame him, exactly. I knew it put a lot of pressure on him for him to continue his duties knowing his sister would soon be exiled. But hopefully this trust here was showing him that he was still in my circle, despite what his sister might have done.

He was the best Beta an Alpha could ask for, and I would reward that with more trust and more responsibility.

“Thank you, Ethan,” I told him. “I mean it.”

He nodded as he looked away,

When I returned to my office, Victoria was leaving. Her expression was tight. She was probably angry with me for not hearing her out. I hoped she could understand that my mind was already made up where Claire was concerned.

Truly, she needed better friends.

She didn’t say one more word to me as she hurriedly headed to the elevator.

Shrugging, I went into the office to continue my searching, hoping the blood test would provide some answers.

Victoria’s POV

I rushed back to Claire’s as soon as I could. No sooner had I burst inside, then she got off the phone.

“Damien thinks Amelia might be a werewolf,” I said.

She scoffs. “I know. Ethan just told me he wants to have her blood checked.”

“He was looking up how werewolf traits manifest in humans on his computer,” I said. “What are we going to do?”

“I told Ethan to go ahead and have it done,” Claire said. “After all, shouldn’t we know what we are dealing with? If she is a werewolf, that would explain how she could have possibly survived that poison.”
