Damien’s POV

If Amelia was a werewolf, it would solve a majority of my problems. For one, I wouldn’t need to worry about her as much anymore. Werewolves were hardier than humans, so she’d be able to endure more without the need for my overprotection.

Not that I wouldn’t still protect her. I absolutely would. But maybe I wouldn’t have to worry so much if…

Well… No. I guess I would still worry.

Alright, but, if she was a werewolf, then maybe my pack would respect her!

Except… I didn’t ever care what my pack thought. Amelia would be the Luna whether or not she was a werewolf or a human.

Hm.

As I considered this, I began to slowly see that it didn’t overly matter to me whether she was a werewolf or a human. I would still love her and our daughter the same. I would still treat them the same too, as protective as

ever.

I supposed it would be some relief to know they would be more hardy if the worst should happen. But as Amelia’s mate, it was up to me to ensure the worst shouldn’t happen to begin with.

Although… I failed her multiple times, hadn’t I?

Dr. Wyatt believed the vials had been switched here in my pack, and the poison was gone from my safe. This betrayal had to be done by someone close to me. And here I was, focusing on whether or not Amelia was a werewolf, too busy to try to track down the person near me who might have been trying to kill her.

I couldn’t keep wearing the blinders on this.

That was exactly what had happened. Only high ranking members of the pack had access to that safe. Which meant that someone close to me had taken that poison.

Immediately my thoughts went to Claire, who had the most reason for wanting Amelia dead. But she was being watched since we returned across the border.

My stomach twisted uncomfortably as I realized it might be Victoria. While she didn’t have a key, as my sister, I often allowed her unbridled access to this floor. Or my mother.

Gods. I didn’t want to start doubting my family but…

Then there was Ethan.

No. Despite being Claire’s brother, he had sworn a loyalty oath to me. After all these years working together, he was like my best friend. He knew me better than almost anyone.

I couldn’t fathom him betraying me, especially understanding all his sister had done to hurt me and the pack. Surely he must have seen why her removal was the best thing for us all.

As I sat in my office, trying to get work done while worry about Amelia, Ethan knocked on the door and entered. Under his arm, he carried a manila folder.

Spotting it right away, I asked, “Is that the results?”

1/2

He nodded, somewhat stiffly, then passed it over.

Opening the folder, I peered inside. There was only one letter, written simply and signed by the lab technician.

The blood sample showed no signs of containing werewolf DNA.

Well, that was that, I supposed.

I was somewhat disappointed, despite myself, but as I already decided this would change nothing, I felt eerily calm about the whole thing.

Amelia was still Amelia. She was still the brave woman I loved, the mother of my child.

This letter didn’t really mean anything.

“Thank you, Ethan,” I said and closed the folder.

Ethan nodded again, then turned and walked out of the room.
