Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 186

Chapter 186

Damien’s POV

“Nothing,” Victoria said with some urgency. “I don’t know anything, I swear.”

She said that too quickly for me to believe her, but before I could question her further, Jake of all people came

nearer to me.

I immediately straightened, not wanting to convey weakness to my greatest rival, though my heart was still racing like I was running for my life.

Victoria used my distraction to her advantage, sneaking out of my hold and disappearing into the crowd.

I wanted to look for her, but right now, Jake was the bigger threat.

“Damien,” he said.

“Jake,” I replied.

Jake glared at me, not even trying to hide the hatred in his eyes.

“I don’t suppose you would let me talk to Amelia,” I asked him.

“Not a chance in hell,” he replied. “In fact, I’m here to tell you that if you even so much as try to look at her again, I will rip you apart.”

“The Alpha King tried to take my head,” I said, “and he didn’t succeed. What makes you think you will succeed where he did not?”

“The Alpha King has a lot on his plate,” Jake said. “He cannot keep up with your dealings, or with Amelia’s. But I am right here. Right beside her at all times. I have nothing but time to keep an eye on her, to make sure you stay the hell away from her.”

“I only want to talk to her,” I said. “Didn’t she read my letter?”

“Letter?” Jake said, narrowing his eyes with distrust and disgust. “What letter?”

“I sent a letter,” I said. “And it explained everything. I had nothing to do with that poisoning. Why would I? I love

her

“Enough,” Jake said. “We are all tired of hearing your lies.”

“They aren’t lies. We worked together not that long ago to keep Amelia safe. Why would I suddenly change my mind?”

“Because you regret having to exile Claire,” Jake said.

“Bullshit,” I replied. “Claire made her bed, and now she has to lie in it. Amelia is my wife and my mate, and she’s carrying my child. I want her safe more than I care about my own safety.”

Gods, my heart was hurting. Was I having a heart attack? All I wanted to do was clutch my chest, but I couldn’t. Not yet.

I had to be strong in front of Jake, or he would think less of me. He was Amelia’s natural protector. If he thought I was weak, he would continue to keep me from her, if only because of that weakness.

“I don’t trust you,” Jake said. “And I don’t see any reason to…” His voice trailed as his attention drifted off to the

side. There, Cara, Amelia’s bodyguard was rushing toward him. That was strange. What was she doing here, without Amelia around?

“Alpha Jake, I need to speak with you at once,” she said. “Immediately.”

The usually stoic woman seemed strained, her eyes wide, her voice slightly shaky with panic.

I wanted to ask what was going on, but Jake just glared at me.

“I’m done here anyway,” Jake said, before turning and going off with Cara.

The minute they walked away, I gripped at my chest. Gods, what was happening to me?

I had to get out of here. I couldn’t be at this party anymore.

I looked around but didn’t see Victoria anywhere. Stumbling I made it out of the ballroom and to the elevator. I felt like people were trying to talk to me, but I couldn’t understand their words. I had nothing to say back to them. I couldn’t even hear them.

In the elevator I slumped down to the ground. Somehow I managed to push the button to my floor.

There, I pulled myself out of the elevator and into the hallway. I made it back to my room, where I lied down in the center of the room and tried to calm my racing heart.

It was out of control. All of my nerves were on edge too.

My wolf was growling, pacing within my mind. When I tried to reach out to him, to find out what was wrong, he wouldn’t answer. It was as if he was feral, driving wild with rage.

Desperate to fight.

To protect.

To protect what?

Or… who?

My skin itched. Was I shifting? I hadn’t unintentionally shifted since I was a child.

This feeling though, it was overwhelming.

I tried to hold it back but I couldn’t.

In a flash, I was a wolf. The pain was still there though, this wasn’t enough.

Throwing my head back, I howled.

Amelia’s POV

I didn’t know how much longer I could run. I was already out of breath, my chest burning from the strain. My swollen ankles couldn’t handle much more hiking, let alone walking.

I didn’t want to give in, couldn’t let this monster chasing me take the life of my child.

But my body was failing me.

An upturned root caught my foot, and I fell.

At the same time, the driver finally closed the distance.

Fully pregnant, standing from this position took strength and time I didn’t have at the time.

“Stay still, you bitch,” the driver growled. He raised the gun.

At the last minute, I curled in on myself, desperate to save my baby.

The gun fired. Immediately, I felt the bullet piece into my shoulder, heading back down my arm.

I screamed, yet, soon, that scream became a growl.

Fur erupted from my skin, as my body shifted, transforming me from my human form and into that of a large gray wolf. I was still pregnant, still turned to protect my pup.
