Chapter 185
Amelia’s POV
“Where are we going?” I asked the driver as he took me out past the city and into the country. We’d been driving for a while now, and morning had pushed into afternoon.
Beyond the windows, the buildings became less and less, until there were only trees and hillsides, and winding roads with no ends in sight.
“Answer me,” I insisted. When he was still quiet, I said more boldly, “I am your Luna, and I demand an answer.”
The man laughed then, cruelly. When he settled down enough to speak again, he said, “Human, you are not my Luna, and you never have been. And that you still consider yourself that is laughable. You truly have no idea the trouble you are in, do you?”
“Explain it to me, then,” I said, braver than I felt.
He shook his head. “Alpha Damien himself ordered your death,” he said.
I swallowed thickly. It was as I suspected, yet the news still cut me deeply. “Why?” I asked.
“Does an Alpha need a reason? It was probably because he didn’t need a human around anymore. Or, more likely, from what I heard, it was for you daring to demand Claire’s removal from the pack. People like her better than you. They always have. You are the only one who couldn’t get that hint and insisted on staying around.”
“Claire is a liar,” I said. “She made trouble for your pack and your Alpha.”
“Says the human,” the driver said. “Who do you think we’ll believe? A woman who never deserved to be the Alpha’s mate to begin with, or the werewolf female who should have been Luna all along. Ah. We’re almost there. It won’t be long now.”
I glanced out the window, but it was all trees now. I couldn’t remember the last time I had seen a building, not even a single house out here. Just a lonely road through the forest.
“Won’t be long for what?” I asked. I still didn’t know where he was taking me.
He glanced up and met my eyes through the rear-view mirror. There was no sympathy there, or any real emotion of any kind. He had the eyes of a man who was already resolved to take a life.
Those were the cold eyes of a monster, a killer, and I knew without a doubt that he had brought me all the way out here to end the life of my baby and me himself.
Damien had ordered my death, he’d said, but it didn’t seem like Damien was actually going to be the one to pull the trigger. The coward.
I was still chilled from this deception. In a way, I didn’t want to believe that Sienna would knowingly lead me into this trap, but how else could this have happened? Sienna’s desire for my disappearance was strong enough for her to be an accomplice in my death.
It was cruel, and it hurt worse knowing how much it was going to gut Martin, Lillian, and Jake if they were to find out. No. When they found out.
I had to believe I would survive this somehow. I couldn’t just accept that I was going to die here, that this monster was going to kill me and my baby.
I couldn’t allow that. I had to fight back, no matter what.

“Here we are,” the driver said. He slowed down and turned the car onto a narrow dirt path, barely visible at the side of the main road. If he had been driving at the posted speed, without knowing that turn was there, it wouldn’t have been noticeable.
Unfortunately, he did know. He had been looking for it. And now that we were on it, he drove the car through the over-grown dirt path. The car bounced on the bump road, jostling me in the backseat.
Could I jump out of the car? Would I be able to get safely away without hurting myself on the fall, or under the car? I wasn’t sure, and the fall could hurt the baby.
But what were my alternatives? If I waited too long, I’d be out of options totally.
Too soon, before I could decide to act, the car came to a stop in a small clearing near a creek. Turning off the car, the driver got out. I tried to push away, but the car door opened before I could. He grabbed me by the arm and dragged me out of the car.
I fell down into the dirt and grass.
If not for the terror, this would have been a beautiful spot. The tree leaves cast dancing shadows over the clearing. The sky beyond was turning orange with the disappearing day. Nearby the creek babbled with fresh flowing water.
Above me, the driver withdrew a gun from his inside pocket. It was a revolver. He flipped open the chamber and put in a few bullets. They weren’t silver, I noticed, but why would they need to be? I wasn’t a werewolf. A normal bullet would do.
Maybe my daughter might survive…
“Now be a good girl and die,” the driver said, as he flipped the chamber back against the gun.
I didn’t wait for him to shoot me. I wasn’t his good girl.
Instead, I rose to my feet and made a mad dash to the trees.
Behind me, the gun fired once, twice, three times.
On the third, the bark beside my head splinted, the bullet now imbedded in the tree.
I forced my pregnant body forward, faster than I ever thought possible.
Behind me, the driver cursed and gave chase.
More gunshots. More cursing.
I panted as I ran, desperate to save my baby even more than myself.
And my treacherous heart…
Even though I had heard Damien was responsible for this, in this moment of extreme fear, my heart cried out for only one man…
Damien! Damien, please! Save me!
Damien’s POV
The Alpha Ball was just starting and I was already bored as hell. Victoria seemed to be having fun. At my side, she continued to point out people to me that I barely recognized. She had an eye for drama, and also made note of any hook-ups or break-ups she spotted.

For a supposedly high-class party, there was a slew of nonsense and drama happening.
I probably should have stopped her need for gossip, but with how dull this all was, her words were the only source of amusement I’d yet to experience.
I knew the night was going to be a bust when I saw Jake and his family enter – without Amelia.
