Chapter 198
Jake’s POV
Damien called the next morning, three times as per usual. I ignored all three attempts.
Martin was sitting in my office, lightly stroking his chin with his hand. Sometimes he came in and read while I worked, or helped me out if I needed it. Today, he was staring off into space. While his eyes were angled toward the window, I wasn’t certain that he was actually seeing anything.
I was fairly certain that he was caught in his own mind.
I didn’t pry into his thoughts. I just waited. If he wanted me to know them, he would eventually tell me himself what they were.
The phone rang again and I checked the caller ID. Damien, calling for a fourth time today, breaking the normal routine that we’d come to expect.
Again, I ignored it, letting it go to my voicemail and allowing him to make another message I wouldn’t listen to. “Damien again?” Martin asked. He blinked and looked over at me.
“Yes.”
“He’s getting desperate.”
None of us knew for sure how far along his condition was already, but it made sense for it to worsen.
“I can arrange for more security,” I said, but even I knew that wasn’t a long term issue.
Dad was quiet for a moment, before he said, “What if we gave him what he wanted?”
“He wants a body,” I reminded my father. Unless my father was talking about grave robbing, I had no idea how he planned to deliver a body to Damien. On top of that, Damien would be able to tell right away whether the body was Amelia’s or not, since they were mated. He should be able to sense it.
“He wants a funeral,” Dad said. “We could hold one here.’
“That’s morbid, isn’t it?” I asked, since Amelia was still alive, even if we were pretending and even if she didn’t remember who she was.
“It won’t be that way for us,” Dad continued. “Instead this could be a funeral for her past life. For Amelia, not Annette. She is someone else now, and there’s no need for her to go back to the old life. This could be her chance to finally move forward with a fresh start.”
“And what about Amy?” I asked.
Dad lowered her head. “We will simply not mention the baby. We allow him to think what he wants about her fate.”
A funeral as a mark of transition? I supposed that wouldn’t be so bad, though we would all have to play the part of the grieving family during the actual ceremony.
But there was another reason, I wasn’t as opposed to this idea as I might have once been.
The matter of blame was still very much up in the air. We still suspected Damien, but he’d given us a lot of reasons to doubt his guilt in Amelia’s attack. However, if it wasn’t him, it had to be someone in his pack. With Alpha Claude, we’d identified the pieces of the attacker and learned he was Damien’s sister’s driver.

There was a connection there, and maybe only Damien could truly figure it out.
However, he’d likely only help with the proper motivation.
If he was genuine, we had a way to facilitate that motivation and use it for our cause.
With that in mind, after speaking quickly about my plan with Martin and coming to a conclusion, I picked up the phone and dialed Damien back.
He picked up right away. “I want her body,” he said. “We need to have a funeral.”
