“Jake?” Amelia asked just outside the door.

In a rush, I smashed the phone down onto the cradle, ending the call before she could walk into the room.

Dad was already on his feet, already moving to intercept her.

“Annette, dear,” Dad said. “We were just finishing up some work in here. Did you need something?”

She looked at Dad, and then over to me. There was a question in her eyes, but they always seemed like that lately, since her awakening.

“No, I was just looking for you. We are just finishing up lunch.”

“I’m almost done,” I told her. “I’ll meet you in the dining room.”

That seemed to satisfy her and she left with Dad.

When I was alone, I sighed and dropped my head into my hands. I had to be more careful. Amelia was in such a delicate state, I couldn’t risk making things worse.

Sienna’s POV

Amelia has to be faking it. She’s a crafty witch, so this has to just be one more game she’s playing with my family.

But… if it isn’t…

I wasn’t totally heartless. Though I had a pretty good idea what was going to happen when Amelia got into that car with that dangerous man, I didn’t really think it was going to end up like this.

Maybe I was naïve in thinking Claire wouldn’t actually try to kill a pregnant woman and an unborn baby. Or maybe I’d been kidding myself that the dangerous man would just take Amelia back to the human realm where she belonged.

Or where I thought she belonged.

Her being a werewolf complicated things. Her not remembering anything gave me an actual chance at redemption.

If she was being serious… If I could get on her good side…

Maybe she would have good memories to go with the bad, enough to be merciful if she remembered my part in

this.

That was assuming she wasn’t lying about all this and just setting us all up for some sick game of her own. More witchy tricks.

Determined to discover the truth, I waited until Amelia was alone and then joined her. She was reading in the living room, resting on the couch, when I walked in, though I wasn’t sure how much she was really reading and how much she was just staring off.

“Hi, Annette,” I said.

She startled, then smiled at me. “Hello, Sienna. How are you?”

“I’m fine,” I said. “I’m more curious about you. You gave us all a scare.”

“I suppose I did,” she said and looked down. “I’m sorry about that.”

She turned then, to smile at me. “Thank you. You are very kind. You know, I’m relieved to find out about you,” she said.

That startled me, “You are?”

“I just… it’s silly, right? But sometimes I get these feelings. When things are familiar or when they aren’t, or when I’m comfortable with someone.”

I braced myself for what might be coming. Did I feel like a stranger to her? Or someone she knew she couldn’t trust? But then why would she say she was relieved?

“I feel like I always wanted a sister,” she said. “Silly, right? I mean, I’ve had one all along. But I still feel happy, like I just learned for the first time.”

I looked at her, deep into her eyes. She could have been a great pretender. Or maybe, at last, I was the final one of my family to fall under her spell.

But she seemed so earnest, and she seemed so happy… because of me. Not because I did anything, but just because I existed.

I didn’t think anyone really felt that way about me.

My phone buzzed in my pocket then. Embarrassed, and finding an excuse to look away from Amelia, I checked the phone.
