Chapter 200

Damien’s POV

Maybe it was the guilt, or perhaps the desperation, but regardless of the reason, I finally found enough purpose to drag myself out of my wolfy vigil and back into the light.

I walked into the Alpha headquarters building, again feeling like I belonged there, though my presence had nothing to do with returning to my Alpha duties and everything to do with uncovering the truth about what happened to Amelia.

I had been so consumed by her death that I hadn’t considered there would be room for revenge.

Many of the people working there stopped to look at me. No one tried to talk to me, instead they just stared like I was some ghost who had just walked into the room.

Even Ethan was startled when he saw me. “A-alpha?”

“In my office, Ethan,” I said. “I have need of you.”

Ethan moved at once, abandoning his desk to follow me into my office. There, I realized that was the most I had said to anyone but Jake in the past two weeks.

At my desk, I didn’t sit. Instead, I just turned around to face Ethan. He wasn’t sitting either. We were both just standing by the empty chairs on either side of the desk.

“I need your help,” I told my Beta.

“Anything, Alpha.”

“I need answers about what happened to Amelia. A full investigation into all of it. I need to find the true culprit to bring to justice. Only then will Amelia find peace,” I said.

If I could attend that funeral and say goodbye to Amelia properly…

It wouldn’t solve my grief, but it might heal some of the splinters inside of my chest. Perhaps then I could grieve the proper way, if there was a proper way.

Or maybe it was revenge that would allow me to finally allow me to shed the weight of guilt within me.

I would never get over Amelia. I would never recover from the pain of her loss. But if I could find even a molecule of solace, I would go to any length. And to be certain Amelia was resting in peace…

Nothing would be able to stop me.

Jake had given me a task, and it would end either through the solving of this case or my own death. One or the other. And with the funeral at stake, I had to move quickly.

“First thing first, I need the entire guest list to the Alpha Ball, including a list of servants,” I said. “Play nice with Alpha Claude’s pack. I want as much information about Amelia’s attacker as they will be willing to spare.

Ethan paled a little. I didn’t know him to have a weak constitution, but perhaps the nature of Amelia’s death rattled him too, almost as much as it rattled me.

She was an innocent woman, and did not deserve to be killed.

And our child… Gods, I didn’t even know what became of our little girl.

For a long moment, I hung my head in fury and fear.

For our daughter. For Amelia.

I would bring her murderers to justice.

When I looked up, Ethan still hadn’t moved. Did he not understand the urgency?

“Alpha,” he said, before I could scold him. “When you uncover the truth and find the people responsible, what will you do to them?”

“I will kill them,” I said plainly. “I will show them no mercy, because they gave none to my mate.”

Jake’s POV

Part of Amelia’s recovery involved taking her to the hospital every day to be checked on by Healer Eve. Today, as usual, I joined her in the examination room. Amelia knew she was training to be a Healer, and sensed she could trust Eve, but she still seemed calmer when I was present.

I didn’t want her to suffer even a moment’s worry, so I went with her most places. These hospital visits were no exception.

We still hadn’t told her about her baby, though Amy was just upstairs in the nursery. Mom wanted to tell her, I thought, but everyone seemed to be following my lead on this. I still wasn’t sure the best course of action, but for now, the secrecy felt like a necessity for Amelia’s overall health and wellbeing.

While Amelia tried to relax on the examination bed, Eve prepared a sedative that would help Amelia sleep so she could perform a more thorough examination.

Amelia looked at me with some concern but also open trust. It felt as if she was silently asking me for reassurance that she would wake up again.

I was happy to give it. “Eve is a talented doctor,” I said. “You will be awake again before you know it.”

Amelia nodded, then sat still while Eve injected the sedative.
