**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah**
**Chapter 23**
**Claire POV**
Here I am, seated in the stark, sterile exam room of the hospital, and I can feel the heat of frustration simmering just beneath the surface. How could Damien not be here with me, not by my side during this crucial checkup? I’m carrying his child, an Alpha heir, and these appointments are vital to ensure that everything is progressing smoothly.
Yet, all he seems to care about is Amelia.
For over a week now, he’s had the pack scouring every corner, searching for her day and night. It’s absurd. That ridiculous human doesn’t deserve his devotion, and she certainly isn’t worth all this chaos.
I am the one who deserves his attention, his care. My child and I are the priority right now. This relentless obsession with finding Amelia is driving me mad.
When the doctor finally enters the room, I make a concerted effort to push aside my anger. It’s essential that I present myself as the brave, compassionate Luna the pack needs to see.
“Claire, everything looks perfect. The baby is developing normally, and I’m very pleased with how well you’re doing,” he says, his tone reassuring.
A smile spreads across my face. Of course I’m doing well. I’m a full-blooded werewolf, not some fragile human who can’t even conceive with her mate.
But then the doctor’s next words hit me like a cold wave, dousing my joy.
“I have to ask: Is there any news of Luna Amelia? We’re quite concerned about her condition, given her pregnancy.”
He referred to her as Luna. I thought everyone had accepted me as the new Luna and had started calling her Amelia. A frown creases my brow, suspicion bubbling up within me.
“Her condition?” I echo, trying to mask my rising panic.
“Well, yes. The Luna is pregnant. A human carrying a werewolf’s child? It’s nothing short of a miracle! But with her disappearance, especially in the wake of a rogue attack… the entire pack is deeply unsettled.”
Amelia… pregnant? How could that even be? And now the whole pack was aware of it!
I struggled to find the right words through my shock. “If… if Amelia really is pregnant, there’s no way to know if it’s Damien’s, is there? I mean, if it were his, would she have run away like that? I bet it’s some other human’s child she’s trying to pass off as his.”
The doctor frowned, mulling over my words, but he didn’t seem convinced. The rest of my visit passed in a haze as I fought to catch my breath.
This could shatter everything.
Amelia was still Damien’s mate, and that would weigh heavily on the pack’s perception. Human or not, the fated mate of the Alpha could now be carrying his child. It wasn’t just her life that was in jeopardy, but the life of the Alpha’s heir as well.
And if Amelia truly was pregnant with his child, Damien would never cease his search for her. He would never let her go, never accept me as his Luna. All my plans, all my hard work, would crumble to dust.
My hands trembled as I drove to Damien’s house, fury bubbling within me. How dare he keep this from me!
I sped through the gate, my tires screeching against the paved driveway. The manicured lawn and vibrant garden blurred past me, each glimpse filling me with resentment. All of this should be mine—Amelia never deserved it, never appreciated what she had.
Bursting into the house, I called out for Damien, my voice echoing through the halls as I marched toward his office. When I found it empty, I turned back to the foyer and made my way upstairs.
“Miss Claire! What a pleasant surprise,” a servant said, her tone overly cheerful. “Can I assist you with something?”
“I’ve been so worried about you and wanted to check if you were okay.”
His hands remained at his sides, and the chill in his voice cut deeper than I had ever experienced. “What are you doing with my wife’s belongings?”
I sniffled, wiping my eyes as I took a small step back. “You’ve been working so hard lately—searching for her, managing your duties as Alpha. I just wanted to help you move on.”
I placed both hands protectively on my stomach. “We have more important things to focus on than Amelia.”
His eyes were like shards of ice, and as he stepped closer, a wave of fear washed over me. He grasped my arms, and I was taken aback by the warmth of his hands, so contrasting to the coldness radiating from him.
“I will never stop looking for my wife,” he growled, his voice low and menacing, sending shivers down my spine. “You are going to leave this room, and this house, and never come back. Do you understand me?”
Stunned, I stared up at him, disbelief coursing through me. Never come back? “But, Damien, I… I belong here!”
“No, Claire. You don’t.” He turned me around and shoved me out the door with a force that left me breathless, instructing the servant to escort me out. “Leave now, Claire,” he commanded, his tone brooking no argument. “And don’t you ever return to my home.”
As I drove home, I called Victoria, my voice barely a whisper through my tears, pleading for her to meet me at my house.
“Everything is falling apart!” I cried as soon as she arrived. “Amelia is going to ruin everything.”
Victoria embraced me, but that only made my tears flow harder. “I wish she were dead!”
The hand rubbing my back halted, and I watched as a slow smile spread across her face. “Actually, that gives me an idea.”
