Chapter 240

Amelia’s POV

Pushing thoughts of Damien aside, I supposed I could understand my family not wanting to lose me as they had lost Amelia, and that this fear could have led them to keeping me in the dark about a lot of things.

I wasn’t thrilled in any way with this outcome but I could at least understand it, and where they were coming from. I also still loved them deeply. They were more than just my family, they were all that I really had.

As frustrated and angry as I was, I really couldn’t turn my back on them, nor did I want to.

I wanted us all to be okay.

Sienna stayed with me in my room for a while, encouraging me to make up with the family. It took a little bit, some space and time, but eventually, I accepted what she was saying.

Together, we walked back downstairs. In Jake’s office, Mom was in the chair I had abandoned, crying. Dad stood beside her, rubbing her shoulders with his hand. Jake stood nearer the desk.

“I keep telling you, it has to be this way,” he said, but he stopped when he noticed me entering the room. ” Annette. You are back.”

Mom looked up, and she and Dad both turned their attention to me.

After glancing at Sienna for some support, I spoke up, “I can get past this. I know you were just trying to protect me, and I want our family to be okay again. But you have to tell me the full truth from now on, okay? No more

secrets.”

For whatever the reason, my words sparked fresh tears for Mom. She covered her face with her hands again and started sobbing once more.

Dad sighed, but nodded.

Jake help my gaze. “No more lies. You have my word.”

“Thank you,” I said.

Mom hadn’t said anything. In fact, she seemed more upset by what I said than anyone else.

Yet, as I was leaving the office with Sienna, Sienna pulled me aside in the hall to say, “Go easy on Mom. Sometimes women need to keep secrets to protect their families.” She glanced away. “Trust me, I would know.”

I wanted to ask her more about that, but she simply walked away then.

It had been a long day already. Maybe what all of us needed was our own space. So I let her go for now.

I was ready for my own space too, so I took to the stairs and went into my bedroom, this time closing the door and locking it behind me.

I still had a pro and cons list to make regarding that Healer apprenticeship offer that Dr. Wyatt and Eve had been talking about.

At the moment though, that all felt so far away.”

I couldn’t stop thinking about Amelia, and what it might mean for her to have been Damien’s mate and the mother of his children.

When I met with him, I had felt affection for him, but how could I possibly express or pursue that romantic attraction when my adopted sister was the one he had lost?

That would be in terrible taste, wouldn’t it? And Damien didn’t even know Amelia was my adopted sister, most likely. He had treated me like a stranger when he met me, like he hadn’t even known I existed.

Pursuing him would only hurt us both.

Perhaps it was better if I focused on lan after all.

Damien’s POV

I traveled with the girls to the capital a day ahead of the start of the events. Benedict wanted to speak with me about Amelia’s memorial in advance and in person, so that we could properly plan.

This meant the girls and I took my private jet to the capital and then accepted a car from the airport to the palace where Alpha King Benedict made his home.

The girls were antsy by the time we arrived. They’d been sitting still for a few hours and were eager to stretch their legs and expel some energy.

While they were excited to finally be here, I was dreading every moment. The last time I had stepped foot in this place, I had been imprisoned and nearly killed. I couldn’t regret it, as in the moment, it had been a gesture of love so that Amelia could be free.

In hindsight, especially with Amelia gone, it was a situation I wasn’t eager to revisit. Because of it, I had given up entirely at ever wanting to join the Alpha Council. Even now, high-ranking members of my own pack wanted me to fix ties with the Alpha King, but until this memorial was suggested, I had no desire to do so.

Even with it, the sooner we can get this done and leave, the happier I would be.

As soon as the car parked and the doors popped open, the girls burst out of the car like a broken dam.

I wanted to hold them back but their energy was too pent up. If they didn’t run some of it off, they’d probably explode. I knew the large courtyard would accommodate them, and the girls were polite enough, even in their play to not bother other guests or the staff.

I just hoped the Alpha King wasn’t annoyed with them. Worried about that, filled with the desire to protect them, I stepped out of the car.

Benedict was there, as I feared, but rather than scolding the girls, who at that moment, were running in circles around him, he threw back his head and laughed.

“I remember the days when I had energy to space. Too far back now. Ah to be young again,” he said, then turned to look at me. “Alpha Damien. There you are. Come with me and let’s discuss the preparations. The children can run and play here, I don’t mind in the slightest.”

That was a relief. Still, I waited for the nanny to exit the second vehicle before I left her in charge of the children.

“I’ll be within earshot, girls,” I told them. “Don’t cause any trouble.”

“We won’t, Daddy!” they said in unison, in sing-song, which usually meant they were certain to.

Amelia’s POV.

As our car pulled up in front of the massive palace, I couldn’t help but be impressed, especially at the sizeable courtyard right before the main building.
