Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 241

Chapter 241

Amelia’s POV

The entire courtyard seemed to hold its breath in response to the girls calling me Mom, but most of the tension seemed to exude from behind me, where my parents and Jake were exiting the vehicle.

“Girls!” Mom called, rushing forward. She seemed confident around them, cool, like she had seen them before. Not just that, but that she also had a relationship with the girls. A familiarity, like they had not just interacted before but also truly spent time together.

“Grammy!” the girls said. They smiled at Mom but seemed hesitant to remove themselves from my legs. One of the girls asked, “Do you know Mommy?”

“I’m sorry, Stacy,” Mom said, speaking to one of the girls, “But this isn’t your mother. This is your mother’s sister. Her name is Annette. But they do look alike, don’t they?”

Both girls looked up at me.

“Hello,” I said, looking down at them. “I’m Annette.”

“Oh…” Stacy said, downtrodden. The other seemed disappointed too. They unlatched their arms from around me and each took a few steps back.

Admittedly, I felt a little lesser to be without their hug. When they were closer, I felt like a missing part of me had been restored. Maybe it was because they were a part of my sister who I had lost, who I couldn’t remember.

Gods, I hated feeling so very broken.

“Girls, you should introduce yourself to your Aunt Annette,” Mom said.

“I’m Stacy,” Stacy said, pointing at herself.

“I’m Amy,” the other girl said. I noticed she looked more like me than Stacy did, though both had features that matched their father.

“Very nice to meet you,” I said to each of the girls.

The girls continued to look at me. “You sure look like Mommy,” Stacy said. “Can we keep calling you Mom?” Amy asked.

“Absolutely not,” Jake said firmly as he came to stand nearer to me. I never considered that Jake might be bad with children, but he glared at the girls now, like they had personally offended him. That didn’t seem necessary, not for girls so young, for asking such an innocent question.

“Jake,” I said, lightly scolding.

To the girls, Jake said, “Run along now.”

“Yes, Uncle,” the girls said and hurried away.

As they ran away, Mom hurried after them. Dad lingered long enough to scold Jake. “You might not choose to spend time with them, but that doesn’t mean you should be cruel to them either. I raised you better than this.”

Dad left too then, leaving me alone with Jake and Ian. I glanced at Jake.

“No one told me I had nieces,” I said.

“This one was not malicious,” Jake said. “More of a happy surprise. I hadn’t realized they would mistake you for Amelia.”

I had a suspicion that Amelia had been Damien’s mate, but to now have that confirmed made something unpleasant click inside of me. Truly, I had no chance with Damien then. Whenever he looked at me, he would only see my adopted sister. How could I ever compete with a dead woman? Someone I had been so close to that I couldn’t even remember?

What kind of sister was I for forgetting?

“Annette,” Ian said, stepping forward. He offered me his arm. “Perhaps you and I could go for a walk. I imagine you wish to clear your head.”
