Chapter 250

Jake’s POV

Amelia was hesitant in telling me where Claire was located, likely because I was near shifting. I could feel my rage pulsing through my veins, making me want to hunt down and kill the woman who had so very nearly succeeding in plotting Amelia’s death.

It was because of Claire that Amelia was in the state she was in now, with no memory of her life before.

If Amelia’s wolf had not manifested at that exact moment, she would have been killed. I still remembered arriving at the scene and seeing her covered in blood. In that moment, I had thought she was injured beyond her means.

Claire had consistently managed to weasel her way out of proper punishment for her crime. Damien claimed that he made an agreement with her parents to spare her, but that deal didn’t sit right with me. This woman had caused irreparable harm, yet she still got to live. She wasn’t even exiled!

To exile her in her present state would be a death sentence, I’d heard from my parents. Wanting to maintain a good relationship with their grandchildren, they hadn’t fought against Damien’s judgement. And I had never traveled close enough to bother with it.

I had thought, back then, that as long as I kept Amelia out of things, that it didn’t matter where Claire was. Let her stay in Damien’s pack, so long as Amelia wasn’t there.

But now, here they were, place.

And I would finish what Damien could not.

My teeth turning sharp, I asked Amelia once more, “Where is she, Annette?” Then, a new, just as vital question filled my mind. “Did she see you?”

The defiance in Amelia’s face shifted at the change of my question. She seemed confused now, looking at me like she didn’t understand why that could matter.

She mustn’t have seen any harm in answering that particular question. “Yes, she saw me…”

White hot terror now joined my rage, shacking my entire body.

Claire had hated Amelia for what she had meant to Damien. Now, for her to know about ‘Annette’s’ existence, she might try to act against her too.

I couldn’t allow that to happen, not if there was anything I could do to stop it.

No matter what, I had to protect Amelia. I had to protect my sister, where I had so sorely failed in the past!

My wolf fought with me over control of my body now, and in our tug-of-war, we both agreed that sidestepping Amelia was the correct choice. She didn’t understand our hate, and therefore wouldn’t support our deadly intentions.

That was fine. I didn’t need to involve her in this nasty business. In fact, the less she knew about this, the better it would be for all involved.

“Jake?” she asked with concern.

I didn’t answer. Instead, I sniffed the air until I could isolate Claire’s scent. Then, I started following it.

Amelia stayed on my trail, but that was fine. I would block her from entering the room before I ripped Claire’s throat out with my teeth. She didn’t need to see it.

Malice oozed from my every pore. Those that started to walk down the hallway toward me immediately turned around as I came closer and went the other way.

The scent took me deeper into the emergency room, until I found a door that I was sure was hers.

Before I could enter it, Damien opened the door and stepped out. After closing the door behind himself, he stood there, blocking my way.

Looking at me, he squared himself up. Crossing his arms, he glared at me.

“What are you doing here, Jake?” Damien asked.

“I came to check on Annette,” I replied. My words were rough from the near shift. “But then I heard about Claire.”

“You can forget you heard about her,” Damien replied.

“Get out of the way, Damien,” I growled. “Nothing will stop me from ending Claire’s miserable life.”

“I will,” Damien said.

I scoffed, annoyed deeply by his continue defiance of justice. “You have failed to kill her all this time. If you cannot end her now, then step aside and let me! She needs to pay for what she’s done.”

“Brother,” Amelia said, stepping from behind me to my side.

She touched my arm, but I shrugged off her gentleness. This rage I felt was not going to be cowed, and her kindness only seared me deeply. She had no idea the crimes Claire had committed, and without that knowledge, Amelia’s soft heart wouldn’t understand this necessity.

Amelia was persistent though, and continued speaking, “I don’t pretend to know the history here, but you cannot kill her.”

“I won’t be stopped,” I said. “It’s best if you walk away, Annette.”

“I won’t,” Amelia said. “Because to do that means allowing a child to die.”

Those words startled me some from my rage, and I turned my head to look at her. “What?”

Damien was the one who answered. “Claire’s blood is a match for what Stacy needs. If you kill Claire, we lose the chance to save Stacy.”

I dragged my vicious glare to Damien, knowing my eyes were flashing red. “Then take the blood from her corpse.”

“It doesn’t work like that,” Amelia said. “She has to be willing. The blood has to be fresh.”

“You are not passing me, Jake. So you can forget this foolishness right now,” Damien insisted.

“Fine. Then I will wait until the child is healed, then I will kill her.”

“You can’t do that either,” Damien said. “I made an agreement to keep her safe.”

“Her parents are dead,” I said.

“To her,” Damien said. He lowered his head. “It was one of the few agreements I had to make to protect my child.”

As I watched him, ice ran through my veins. “What else did you agree to, Damien?”

“She will not be harmed,” Damien replied.
