The air in the room felt thick, charged with unspoken tension as Damien cast a sidelong glance in my direction. I was almost certain he couldn’t hear the frantic thoughts racing through my mind, yet I still flinched, as if he could somehow peer into my very soul and discern the accusations I had been harboring against him.

“Claire is ready for the blood donation,” he announced, his voice steady but laced with urgency.

“Right,” I replied, steeling myself as I began to move toward him. The supplies I needed were already waiting inside the examination room, a mere few steps away. All I had to do was cross the threshold.

But just as I was about to take my second step, Jake’s hand shot out, seizing my arm with a grip that felt like iron. I was effectively trapped, unable to budge an inch without his permission.

“Let her go, Jake,” Damien growled, his voice low and menacing. “My daughter’s life hangs in the balance.”

“Then get another Healer to do it,” Jake shot back, his tone defiant. “I’m not sending her in there with that viper.”

With every moment that ticked by in their argument, my frustration and anger simmered closer to the surface. Each second wasted was a precious moment stolen from the chance to save Stacy’s life.

“Stop this!” I suddenly shouted, my voice echoing off the sterile walls. Never in my wildest dreams had I imagined I would find myself raising my voice to my own brother, let alone two fierce Alpha wolves. But I had reached my breaking point. “This is ridiculous! Let me go, Jake. I’m going to save that little girl, whether you like it or not!”

Taken aback, Jake immediately loosened his grip on my arm. “I wasn’t trying to stop you because I want her dead,” he defended, his voice softer now. “I just don’t want you alone in there with Claire.”

“Then come with me,” I insisted, my eyes darting to Damien. “You too, if that will help. Whatever it takes to get you two to stop snarling long enough for me to do my job!”

Damien’s expression mirrored Jake’s surprise, perhaps even more so since he stood a good distance away from me. Had my sister never raised her voice like this? Had she never felt the need to assert herself?

Knowing what I did about Damien’s past with Claire, I doubted Amelia had ever felt such a necessity. More likely, she was a gentle soul, much like I could be when the situation allowed for it. But when the circumstances demanded strength, I wasn’t afraid to unleash it. I knew Jake and my parents would always have my back, ensuring I never faced any repercussions alone, and they would never harm me.
