**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah 265**
**Chapter 265**
**Amelia’s POV**
Damien’s gaze was intense, almost electric, as if he was contemplating the very act of kissing me. My heart fluttered at the thought, and I found myself yearning for that connection, for the warmth of his lips against mine. Yet, just as quickly as the moment began to unfold, he seemed to pull back, hesitating as if caught in a tempest of conflicting desires.
Instead of leaning in, he gently set me back on my feet, and we resumed our dance in a more conventional manner. His smile lingered, soft and inviting, prompting me to mirror his expression, even as the carefree joy we had just shared began to dissipate like mist in the morning sun. An invisible wall had re-erected itself between us, and I felt a familiar pang of regret wash over me.
Damien was not just any man to me; he was my late sister’s ex-lover. Their past was marred by a scandalous affair that had resulted in a child, a painful reminder of what had once been. He had distanced himself from me more than once, and I understood now that pursuing him further would only lead to heartbreak. It was like a dance with sorrow, a rhythm I was all too familiar with. Sooner or later, I would be left to face the music alone.
As the melody began to fade, I could have lost myself in the dance with him, would have cherished the chance to twirl in his arms all night long. But before the next song could fill the air, Damien took a step back, lowering his head in a gesture of respect. “Thank you very much for that dance, Annette,” he said, his voice warm yet tinged with something deeper.
“Thank you,” I replied, my heart heavy. “It was lovely.”
Though his smile remained, it now carried a bittersweet quality, a mix of joy and sorrow that resonated within me. I couldn’t help but feel my own smile falter, reflecting the sadness that had crept into our moment.
“I should return to my girls,” Damien stated, breaking the lingering silence.
“Yes,” I affirmed, though a part of me wished he would stay.
As he lingered, his eyes locked onto mine, an unspoken tension hung in the air. Neither of us made a move to part ways, caught in a delicate dance of hesitation.
“I should go,” Damien finally murmured, his voice barely above a whisper.
