**Chapter 270**
**Jake’s POV**
“What on earth were you thinking, bringing up the kids with her?” I couldn’t help but question Mom as I guided her into my cramped office aboard the plane. The space was modest, furnished with a desk and a pair of chairs, a television mounted on the wall, and, most crucially, a door that could be shut to ensure our discussion remained confidential.
“I merely spoke about my grandchildren,” Mom replied, her tone light but her expression betraying a hint of defensiveness.
Leaning closer, I lowered my voice, conscious of the potential for eavesdropping. “But those are her children too, Mom. What if all this reminiscing stirs up memories she’s tried to bury? We could lose her all over again.”
Mom’s brow furrowed in disapproval. “You might not spend much time with your nieces, but your father and I love those girls as if they were our own flesh and blood.”
“Please, don’t go there,” I interjected, my frustration rising. I had heard this argument far too many times before. Mom seemed determined to bridge the gap between me and Amy and Stacy, hoping that one day they could be embraced as part of our family. It was as if she was willfully ignoring the potential risks involved in such a reunion.
My primary concern had always been Amelia’s safety. It wasn’t that I disliked my nieces; on the contrary, I held a deep affection for them and genuinely wished the best for their futures. But I wanted to keep that love at a distance. The further they were from our lives, the less likely they would trigger those long-buried memories and emotions within Amelia.

If she were to remember her past…
We simply could not allow that to happen. Amelia had been granted a fresh start, a chance to rebuild her life, and it was our responsibility to ensure she was afforded every opportunity to thrive. The last thing she needed was to be dragged back into the chaotic drama that had once consumed her, especially with Damien lurking in the shadows.
“Fine,” Mom conceded, shifting her approach. “But we can’t ignore the fact that they need a positive maternal influence in their lives.” She took a moment to collect her thoughts, exhaling slowly. “They need their mother, Jake.”

I could acknowledge that my sister was fiercely independent and stubborn, but the idea of wanting her to be submissive? That was a notion I couldn’t wrap my head around. I couldn’t envision her sitting at home, doing nothing, and being content with that kind of life.
“I’ll admit that Ian might not be the best choice for Annette,” I conceded, “but that doesn’t mean I’m going to let her return to Damien. If Annette and Ian can’t make it work, I’ll find someone else who can.”
Mom sighed heavily, her gaze softening as she looked at me with a mix of pity and affection.
“Jake, I’m proud of you for caring so deeply about your sister and for wanting to protect her. But perhaps it’s time to give her some space to carve out her own path. Maybe you should focus on yourself for a change. When was the last time you went on a date?”
