I can’t let myself think about my own needs, especially after how I have failed her in the past,” I declared, my voice steady but laced with urgency. “Once she is married, settled, and happy with a man who isn’t Damien—someone I can truly trust to keep her safe—then I might allow myself to consider my own future.”

“Jake,” my mother began, her tone a mix of concern and disbelief.

I quickly shook my head, cutting her off before she could continue. I wasn’t in the mood to entertain any further discussion. There was nothing she could say that would sway my resolve.
