A wave of relief washed over me as I savored a moment of triumph.

The more distance Amelia maintained from Damien, the more it favored my position.

Damien’s relentless search yielded nothing once again.

As each member of his extensive search team returned with the same disappointing news, frustration simmered just beneath the surface of his composed exterior. He had mobilized a significant number of people, leveraging connections and resources to assemble this large team in record time. The thought that all his efforts had resulted in naught—no sightings, no leads—was a bitter pill to swallow.

As he recalled the search team, he stood impatiently, waiting for everyone to gather in front of the mall.

“No one saw anything? Not a single clue?” he inquired, his voice laced with disbelief.

The collective head shakes that greeted him felt like a punch to the gut, and he ran a hand through his tousled hair, frustration mounting.

“Was there at least anything out of the ordinary?” He turned sharply to the team responsible for inspecting vehicles leaving the parking garage. “Did you come across anything unusual during your inspections?”

“No, sir,” replied the young man who had been designated as the leader of that team. He was an up-and-coming enforcer within the pack, displaying a promising future ahead. “We conducted a thorough inspection of every vehicle. Except for Luna Lillian’s, of course.”

Damien, who had been about to pivot away to question another group, froze mid-motion, a frown creasing his brow.

“What did you just say?”

At that moment, Victoria and Claire arrived, their presence coinciding perfectly with the unfolding tension. “We told him to let her go,” Victoria explained to her brother, her tone casual. “We figured you wouldn’t want us stirring up trouble with another pack’s Luna.”

Damien’s eyes narrowed instantly, darting between his sister and Claire. Their expressions were bland, almost too innocuous, as if they were trying too hard to appear helpful. Doubt gnawed at him—were they being entirely truthful?
