Chapter 348
Damien’s POV
“No,” Jake said. “No way in hell.”
“I don’t know,” Lillian said, softer, “Perhaps it would be best for her not to remember all the hardships she has suffered. She’s been through so much. We… just want her to be happy.”
“She can be happy with us,” Jake said. “Her family.”
“She needs her mate,” I said firmly. My patience was wearing thin with him. I could understand where he was coming from, wanting to protect Amelia, but she was my mate, returned to me after a long absence. I would not be kept from her.
And I hadn’t forgotten how these people, her family, hid her away from me and her children for the past six years.
“She was fine without you for six years,” Jake snapped. “She’ll be fine again.”
“You lied to her about me,” I said. “And lied to me about her.”
“Jake,” Martin said in a fatherly tone, interrupting our fight before it could even begin. “Trying to protect her from hardship and heartache was the very reason we kept her hidden away as Annette. We’ve lied to her for years, trying to protect her. Do you not see it as hypocritical that you are against this now?”
Jake shook his head. “She should be with us. Not him.”
“I’m afraid we don’t get to choose that this time, son,” Martin said.
“Amelia might not have her memories, but her heart is the same,” Lillian said. “Even when she was Annette, she was drawn to Damien. And before that, before she lost her memories… she still loved him.”
Hearing her say that filled my chest with a warm, longing feeling. If I hadn’t pushed Amelia away the first time, if I had heard her concerns instead of pushing them to the side, I could have spared us both a lot of heartache.
I would do things right this time. I would protect her as she deserved.
“I’m certain this was all orchestrated by the Moon Goddess,” I said. “She has granted us a boon, giving Amelia and me a chance to sweep away the mistakes of the past, forget all the pain, and just enjoy nothing but happiness for the rest of our lives.”
“If the Moon Goddess blessed you, then she cursed us,” Jake said miserably, lowering his head. His hands were curled into fists at his side.
“We have some rights as her family,” Martin said to me. “We can recognize that she might be best with you, but we do not want to be excluded from her life. We are her true family, and she must learn about us. About being a werewolf. I have no doubt she loves you, but there will be a time when she needs all of us.”
I didn’t disagree with that, so I nodded. “When I found Amelia in the human realm, she was living a lonely life.”
I remembered vividly, in the past, asking her if she should say goodbye to anyone before eloping with me into the werewolf realm. I had cautioned her that she would likely not return.
She’d told me, “I don’t have anyone. Not here. Not anywhere.”
I had placed her hands to my chest so she could feel my steady heartbeat and know that my heart now beat for her. “You have me.”

She had smiled. “And you have me.”
Now, returning to the moment, standing in the hospital with her parents and her brother, I recognized how truly sad she must have been, and how my keeping her isolated at our estate hadn’t helped matters.
I wanted to be her one and only love, but that didn’t mean she couldn’t have friends or family.
“You should remain a part of her life,” I said to her parents, and even to Jake. “She might not remember you, and it might take time for her to warm up to you again, but… She thought she was an orphan in the human realm. She always wanted a family. Parents. Siblings.”
Perhaps at the start, she had hoped that my own mother and sister would fill those roles for her. Instead, they despised her for being human and treated her as lesser. Most of the pack did.
“You drove her away once,” Jake said. “Your initial fight. It was about Claire, wasn’t it?”
“She doesn’t know the girls,” Lillian said, gasping.
“I’ve already told her we have two daughters,” I said. “I have no intention of bringing Claire into this at all.”
“You will have to get the girls to agree,” Martin said. “I imagine that won’t be difficult. They both called Annette Mom even when we tried to get them not to. But they should be told what’s happening here.”
That was true.
Lillian checked her watch. “School is almost done. Perhaps… Martin and I could retrieve them. We can take them for a treat, and break the news gently.”
“That would be very kind, thank you.” As much as I wanted to talk to my daughters myself, that would mean leaving Amelia alone. Since I was the only one she seemed to truly remember and trust, leaving would be something like abandoning her. I couldn’t do that.
The girls loved their grandparents. I was certain this was a good course of action.
With that decided, Martin and Lillian left, and Jake and I were forced to wait again.
Before too long, Eve appeared once more. “Damien, she needs you.”
I stood at once, marching forward. Jake tried to follow, but Eve stepped into his way.
“She’s overwhelmed, Alpha Jake,” Eve said. “Seeing you, someone she does not recognize, will only make things worse.”
Jake grumbled in reply. If he had words to say, I didn’t hear them as I pushed through the doors and returned to Amelia’s room.
She was crying again, her face buried in her hands. Her shoulders lightly shook.
The sight broke my heart, so I surged forward, came to her side, and pulled her straight into my arms. As she was resting on the bed, she had to lean far to fall more fully into my arms. But as she wrapped hers around me, pressing her face to my chest, I knew she felt safe.
“I’m sorry,” she said, her voice wet and full of sniffles. “You must think me the worst kind of crybaby.”
“I don’t,” I assured her. Lightly, I began combing my fingers through her hair, hoping to comfort her. “You lost six years of your life. That would be a shock to anyone.”
