Amelia’s POV

As a family, Mom, Dad, the girls, Damien, Jake, and I ate the cake the girls and I had made and brought. We laughed and joked. Mom and Dad told stories, and the girls asked questions. Everyone kept smiling at me.

I might have been missing the memories from the past six years of my life, but I was certain that I never in my life felt as whole and as loved as I did right in this moment.

It was almost too much, certainly more than enough to overwhelm me, and I softly started to sob.

Everyone reacted at once, wanting to know what was wrong and if I was okay. I didn’t have answers for them. I could barely formulate words. I just shook my head and hoped they understood.

They didn’t seem to.

Only when Damien stood, took my arm, and led me away from the table with the promise, “We’ll be right back.”

We didn’t go far, just into the hallway for some privacy. There, he turned toward me and placed his hands on my

arms.

“Tell me what’s wrong,” he said.

With only him here in the hallway with me, it was a bit easier to speak. At least, in small bursts. “Nothing.”

He gave me critical look that told me he didn’t believe me.

Without his having to ask again, I tried to put words to the well of emotion within me.

“I’m just… so… happy.” There really wasn’t any other way to say it.

Damien seemed surprised for a moment, but then his expression smoothed out, showing patience and endearment. Stepping forward, closer to me, he wrapped his arms around me and pulled me toward him.

I went willingly. Burying my face in his chest, I allowed the tears to flow freely. My emotions were overwhelming, but in part, that was only happening because I felt safe, free to express them so openly.

Damien held me until I stopped crying, then, as I looked up at him, smiling, he leaned down and kissed me.

“I’m glad you are happy,” he said, near my lips. “That’s all I want for you, now and forever.”

I hoped he knew that I credited him for this. Not only was he my husband, he also had agreed to this trip, allowing me to grow closer with all of my family at once.

“I love you,” I told him.

“And I love you,” he said and kissed me again.

Damien’s POV

While Amelia was spending time with her parents and the kids, there were moments where I felt a bit like an intruder in their reunion. None of them made me feel that way. I was certain I was doing it to myself.

Maybe it was the guilt. I loved Amelia, and I believed this choice to keep the past six years a secret was the right one. But it wasn’t easy to look at the love of my life and lie right to her face.

The only odd member out of the group was Jake. This made us unlikely company for each other as we went to Jake’s office and he poured us each a stiff drink.

Though, with some thought, perhaps this comradery wasn’t so strange after all, and not just because we were reluctant brothers-in-law. We also shared the weight of having lied to Amelia in rather big ways.
