Chapter 362
Though it was a terse connection, even with drinks in our hands.
“Were you able to find anything out about Claire?” Jake asked me.
I regretted that I didn’t have good news. “She refused everything, of course. She even called Ethan to prove to me she hadn’t asked anything of him. They both lied to me.”
“You believe it might have been Ethan in the woods?” Jake asked.
I nodded. “They had clearly talked before, and it wouldn’t be the first time she had tried to make Ethan do her work for her.”
“He let her live,” Jake said.
“Yes,” I replied. “And I won’t forget that.” In fact, I was grateful. I didn’t know when the change happened, assuming the attacker was Ethan. Clearly, he had gone there to meet and kill Amelia. The rope burn on her neck proved that he had at least started to carry out that plan.
But then something must have happened to him. He could have finished the job, but he didn’t.
I hoped being with Victoria, and having children helped him put things into better perspective. If he couldn’t remember how Amelia had saved his life in the past, perhaps he did this time.
“I can’t pin anything on Claire yet,” I admitted, “But I’m not giving up. I have eyes on her back home. We just need her to make one mix up, and we can deal with her at last.”
“At the hospital,” Jake said. “When Stacy was ill, didn’t you make promises to the Moon Goddess to gain Claire’s cooperation?” He eyed me with suspicion. “Are those vows affecting you now?”
“No,” I said. “Those vows were regarding her crimes of the past. But she has acted again, and now I can act on those crimes where the vows might have barred me before.”
Jake nodded. I wasn’t sure if he believed me, he certainly did seem to from the depth of his frown, but he didn’t ask any more questions or make any more implications.
Instead, he said, “I don’t know if you saw the news, but Sienna has finally been convicted of her crimes. She will no longer be able to escape justice. In fact, tomorrow, she will be held for sentencing.”
The shift in topic made some of the tension between us ease up a little. Things with Claire were complicated, given the vows and promises I made to have her help Stacy, but things with Sienna were much simpler, even if they were more painful for Jake personally.
In this, we were united, partners in fighting a common enemy.
“Is the sentencing open to the public?” I asked.
“No,” Jake said. “But I am Alpha and allowed where I please. And I could bring a guest with me.”
“I’d be most appreciative,” I said, and took a sip of the drink. It was strong liquor and burned the whole way down.
“We can’t let Amelia know,” Jake said. “You must have seen in her, same as I did, that blind hope in her sister.”
