Chapter 368
Amelia’s POV

Even alone, Damien didn’t tell me if anything was wrong. He smiled and kissed me, and we held each other through the nights. When we were in the estate, everything seemed fine. It was only when we were outside of it, that he seemed strange, always looking around like he was expecting something to happen.
After a few days, it became time to return to Damien’s pack. I needed to handle that half of the banquet planning, and it seemed unfair to do that over the phone or online when I had gone to all the appropriate stores and rental places in person here in Jake’s pack.
As Damien loaded the car, the girls and I hugged Mom and Dad extra tightly. It was a difficult goodbye, which seemed silly. After all, we’d see each other in only a few short weeks at the banquet itself.
Maybe it was because in the time we’d been here, I had come to know and love my lost family. Now that I had a Mom and Dad and a brother, I was hesitant to leave them again, worried I might lose them.
Even I knew that was a silly fear, but I couldn’t keep myself from feeling it.
Sometimes, though I didn’t remember the past six years, I felt like my body did. I’d feel anxious, suspicious, or worried without knowing the cause myself.
I wished my wolf was here, so that I could speak to her. Even when I couldn’t remember things, I was certain she would be able to, as she had her own consciousness and feelings.
For now, though, I was on my own. And that left me in the dark.
“We’ll see you soon,” Mom said, hugging me. “Take care of yourself.”
“I will,” I promised.
When I hugged Dad, he said, “We love you.”
“I know,” I told him. Their love had been so clear the past few weeks, that I had felt it seep down into my very bones. Though I had known them in my mind for only a few short weeks, it was clear to me that I already loved them back. I decided to tell him, “I love you too, Dad.”
When he pulled back from me, I swore he had a tear in his eye. He quickly blinked it away.
My last hug was with Jake. “If Damien hurts you, tell me at once,” he said. I had learned that this protectiveness was the way my brother showed his affections.
“I will,” I said, answering quickly. I was incredibly confident that such a thing would never happen. Damien was my fated mate, the love of my life. What could he ever possibly to do hurt me?
As the girls and I finished our hugs, Damien trotted back over, the car loaded with our luggage and ready for travel. He shook hands with Mom and Dad. He didn’t bother reaching for Jake’s, which was probably a good idea with the way Jake was glaring at him.
“If anything happens to Amelia,” Jake said to Damien. “I will kill you.”
I gasped. Mom covered her face with her hands. Dad said softly, “Son.”

But Damien simply stared back at Jake, unaffected. “I vow to the Moon Goddess that I will protect her.”
Jake glowered further, but then nodded, accepting the vow for what it was. I didn’t know the full extent of a vow like that, but even I could feel a sort of magic charge in the air as he made it.
It seemed important, like a vow to the Moon Goddess was something more than just words.
“That is enough,” Jake said. “For now.”
As we turned to leave, Damien put his arm around me.
“What is a vow to the Moon Goddess?” I asked as we walked to the car.
“It’s a promise that I cannot break,” he replied. “I never would anyway, but your brother has trouble believing me by only my words. The vow was necessary.”
Claire’s POV
Even in hiding, especially after returning to my home pack, it didn’t take long to learn that Amelia was planning on taking on the duties of Luna. Her first order of business? Some nonsense banquet to show the alliance between Jake and Damien’s packs.
Completely unnecessary and ridiculous. Our pack has long stood on its own, we didn’t need any connection to a pack as lesser as Jake’s.
Yet, having learned this, some of Amelia’s visits in Jake’s pack lands made more sense. She had visited a florist, a dressmaker, and a caterer, as well as a place that seemed to rent out large tents and catering equipment.
I should have already expected that she had been planning a part, but most of my attention had been given with trying to remain hidden.
Now that I was back in my own pack lands, that seemed less important. Though I didn’t want to be recognized, I now needed to take precautions in case I was. That meant, my wheelchair was back and the wig was gone.
My main goal was still to get Amelia alone. But, until that was possible, I very much was going to sabotage her little party.
I couldn’t wait to see the sadness and disappointment on her face, hopefully right before I could destroy her life at my whim.
For now, I waited outside of a bakery as Amelia and Damien went inside. I kept to the shadows, not wanting to reveal myself too soon.
When they were gone, I waited for their protective entourage to clear out of the area, then I moved toward and
entered the store.
I knew this store well, and the owners, Patty and Cliff. They had been good friends of my parents and thought well of me. The moment they saw me, they brightened even further than they had been already.
Amelia and Damien must have promised them a lot of business. I hoped their loyalty to me would win out over their greed.
“Claire!” Patty said and walked around the counter to stand nearer to me. “How wonderful to see you. You don’t

visit us nearly enough.”
“I apologize for that,” I said. “Was that Amelia and Damien I saw just now leaving here?”
