Damien’s POV

Seeing Claire here, now, after she eluded us for so long made my blood boil. Where had she been all this time? How had she managed to evade the guard? And what on earth was she actually doing here now of all places. I was certain that Amelia had not provided her with an invitation. I had checked many times to make sure that her name was not among the requested guests.

She seemed civil enough at the moment, dressed for such an occasion. She even had a servant pushing her chair through the grass.

Leaving Amelia to handle the guests and the party, I stepped directly into Claire’s path. The servant stopped, and Claire looked up at me, her expression unimpressed.

“It’s rude to keep a lady from a party like this,” Claire said.

“I’m surprised to see you,” I replied. “You’ve had quite the disappearing act the past few days.”

“Oh? How curious,” she said. “I have no idea why you would think such a thing, or how you would possibly know what I’ve been up to. Unless you had me followed, of course.’

I narrowed my gaze at her. I supposed it wasn’t terribly surprising that she knew my guards had been following her, especially after she had evaded them.

“You shouldn’t be here,” I said, and while I thought this would be obvious, she seemed ready to fight me on it when she lifted up her chin, glaring at me.

“Need I remind you that I am a pack council member? I have every right to be here. Every other council member is here, and it is a blatant insult that I am to be excluded.

“Ah, Claire, there you are,” said Councilman Stark from behind me.

I turned, surprised to find that he had gotten so close without my realizing. The whole of my anger must have been directed so much at Claire, that the rest of my senses had dimmed.

Councilman Stark stepped around me to greet Claire.

Claire took his hand in both of hers. “There you are Stark. Why you won’t believe the Alpha’s rudeness. He refuses to allow me entrance.”

“She doesn’t have an invitation,” I said bluntly.

“Don’t be ridiculous, Alpha. Of course she does,” Councilman Stark said. “I thought it strange that she was excluded, so I invited her myself. The full of the Council should be invited to these things. Your Luna may have planned a wonderful event here, but that type of rudeness won’t be tolerated.”

He turned to look at me more fully.

“I’m willing to believe, for the sake of the Luna and this beautiful party she planned, that this rudeness was an accidental oversight,” Stark said flatly. “We all know she’s been suffering some memory issues. It’s possible that she simply didn’t know that Claire is now on the council.”

Behind Stark, Claire started to smile.

“I hope you aren’t making threats to your Alpha,” I said through grit teeth, my anger mixing with my frustration in a most unfortunate cocktail of dark emotions.

“No,” Stark said, and lowered his head. “I simply do not wish to put a tarnish on our Luna’s party.”

He might have been taking a more submissive pose physically, but I could hear the warning in his voice. I could understand the meaning.

For Claire to be purposefully excluded, whether made public by Councilman Stark or by Claire herself, would reflect poorly on Amelia, who was trying very hard to throw the perfect party and win over the people of both packs.

The people from my pack were ready to be critical of her, as they had been in the past. So far, Amelia had won their favor both in her expert planning and in her demeanor. For any kind of scandal to arise, especially one that included Claire would be a stain on Amelia’s re-entry into the public life.
