Chapter 375
I knew she was guilty of plotting to kill Amelia, but I wasn’t sure I could prove it. And then there was the vow I made to the Moon Goddess to not act against her in my pack.
For now, for Amelia, all I could do was stand to the side. Even though it made my stomach churn and my blood boil. Even though I hated myself for it.
I took a deep breath and stepped aside, allowing Councilman Stark, Claire, and her servant the entrance to the
main tent.
Amelia’s POV
I had lost track of Damien, which seemed strange as all evening the man had been glued to my side. Yet, though I worried about where he wandered off to, in his absence, Jake swooped in like he had been waiting in the wings for the opportunity to be beside me.
“Damien seems to have disappeared,” Jake said and sounded annoyed about it. “Didn’t he vow to the Goddess to protect you.”
“Don’t be too harsh,” I told my brother. “This is a big event for him too. I’m sure there are lots of people that he needs to talk to. Lots of places for him to be.”
“I’m not so sure…” Jake said. His voice trailed off as he looked at someone behind me. Turning, I saw a woman in a wheelchair moving through the tent.
I squinted. Was that… what was her name… Claire? I had heard that her parents had died. Did something happen to her?
Jake started to growl. Grabbing my arm, he started to pull me behind him. He was much stronger than me, and we had switched places before I even knew it. Then, he stormed forward, meeting Claire in the middle of the large tent.
Jake’s hands were at his sides, his fingers curled like they could turn to claws at any moment.
I couldn’t allow this to turn into a brawl! This was supposed to be a celebration!
Talking down an Alpha was a precarious task, however. They weren’t to be demeaned or embarrassed in public. That meant that I had to convince him to back off without seeming too direct or overbearing about it.
I almost needed for him to admit that it was his idea.
Thinking of a plan, I hurried closer. I sneaked around him and carefully placed myself in front of him.
“Jake,” I said.
“Out of the way, Amelia,” he growled in reply.
I slightly stepped to one side so as to obey him, but I was still mostly in the path, keeping him from attacking Claire.
“Jake, please,” I said softer, my voice barely a whisper, for his ears only.
“She’s right, Alpha,” Claire said. The word Alpha carried such venom that it was clearly an insult. “I refuse to be
1/2
removed from a party for my own pack. And this is supposed to be a celebration of alliance, isn’t it? Are you really ready to start a fight with another pack’s councilwoman?”
Oh, no. She was not taking that holier-than-thou tone with my brother, the Alpha.
I placed my hand on Jake’s shoulder. “Let me handle this.”
Then, I turned around, facing Claire fully.
