Chapter 380
Then, in the distance behind me, a wolf howled.
Fear shook through me. I knew that howl, Alpha and intimidating. And far too close for my liking.
Damien.
And if he was there, likely Jake was with them, neither of them wanting to allow my escape,
Another howl, this must have been Jake’s, sounded shortly after and Impossibly closer.
I started running again, but as my heart raced, my adrenaline soaring, I knew that I wasn’t going to be fast enough to escape them.
The caught up to me in a small clearing in the forest. Jake dodged ahead of me, blocking my path. His wolf lips were pulled back, revealing his sharp teeth and his snarl.
I turned around, blind hope making me want to try to escape the other direction. But Damien was there, growling.
I was trapped.
As a wolf, they were more likely to attack me, so I quickly shifted to my human form. Kneeling on the ground, I tried to make myself as sad and pathetic as I could possibly appear. I even forced tears to my eyes.
“Damien… Alpha… Please…” I lowered my head, putting myself in the most submissive posture I could manage, hoping to put his wolf’s bloodlust at ease. “Damien, didn’t you make vows to me? Didn’t you promise to the Moon Goddess that you would not come after me?”
Damien in his wolf simply stared at me. For a moment, I felt a sharp, blinding victory. Yes, he had made those promises. He couldn’t blame me now, no matter what I did. He had to let me go.
Foolish Alpha… Who had the real power here?
“It doesn’t matter if he made vows or not,” said a voice behind me. Turning, I saw Jake was now in his human form. My good humor vanished, my sense of victory dried up in a flash. I might have cowed Damien, but Jake was still an Alpha that needed contending with, and he was much more difficult to control.
Still, I had to try. I wasn’t going to simply give in and allow myself to be punished without a fight.
“You aren’t my Alpha,” I said to him. “I am a member of Damien’s pack.”
“Yet, the crime you have committed today happened on the border of both our lands,” Jake said. “And now, you have very much chosen the wrong direction to escape to.”
I froze. Looking around, I tried to remember which turns I had taken and how far I had run.
It couldn’t be…
I would never be so careless…
And yet, these woods were not familiar to me.
