Amelia’s POV
Mom and Dad were watching the girls. Keeping them away from the action, they were still on the dance floor, near the band. The band had long since playing, with most of them having put away their instruments. The party was over and would not be restarted.
When I found them, the girls rushed to me, hugging me around the waist. They weren’t crying but they were clearly afraid, clinging to me tightly with a trembling grip.
Mom and Dad stepped closer. They looked at me with pride in their eyes, but they too seemed somewhat rattled about what happened. As a former pack Alpha and Luna themselves, I was certain that they had seen all kinds of things in their time.
The life of a werewolf could be a vicious existence, but this event… the poisoning of a child…
It would take someone truly heartless to deal with this and come out the other side unaffected.
Worse, I had few answers for them. I didn’t know why this was happening or how it occurred. The absence of both Damien and Jake told me that they were looking into things, investigating, taking charge like Alphas did.
But in their absence, the general public seemed afraid. Maybe this was role of a Luna, to help hold things together in times of crisis.
“It’s terrible, what has happened here,” I said loudly. Everyone around gave me their attention. The few that had been talking quieted themselves to listen to me now. “We don’t yet have all the answers that we need, to know who has dared to ruin an event like this, that was intended for happiness and celebration.”
I swallowed hard, taking the moment to think of my next words. “But our Alphas are working on finding the answers. Together, which only shows the strength of the alliance between our two packs. Whoever did this was attempting to break us, but they will not succeed. Together we are strong. We will pray to the Moon Goddess to protect that little boy. And we will stand as one to not let the culprit break us.”
My words seemed to offer some comfort to those that heard them. The people nearby nodded, their faces now clear of helplessness. They at least had some purpose now, something to rally behind.
Dad touched my shoulder. To me, he said, “You shine as pack Luna, Amelia. We couldn’t be more proud.”
I was happy to have pleased my family, and my pack. I just truly, with all of my heart, wished that it had occurred under better circumstances. I didn’t want a tragedy to occur for me to have a chance to shine. But I supposed we weren’t given a choice in these moments. They tended to be thrust upon us whether we wanted them or not.
It was how we acted in them that revealed who we really were.
In this, perhaps, I showed the two packs the kind of Luna I was and would be.
Claire’s POV
I didn’t like the idea of abandoning my wheelchair in this situation. Until now, it had been the perfect sympathy- gainer and a shield from most of the viler accusations and punishments. But in needing a quick escape, it would have only slowed me down.

Wheelchairs weren’t meant for pushing through forest floors. My wolf, however, was made for this kind of environment and reveled in it. It had been some time since I had last allowed my wolf the freedom to run. Now, I was pushing her to run as fast as her legs would take us, hoping to escape two angry Alphas.
