Chapter 389

Damien’s POV

In my office, I watched the news coverage of Claire being led into the courthouse with growing annoyance. I had been suspecting some protesting there, given what my own pack council had petitioned to me not that long ago, but seeing the sheer number on the screen made a growl erupt from my throat unbidden.

The protestors were from both packs. From the signs, I could gather, Jake’s pack didn’t want anything to do with Claire. Those from my own pack seemed to believe, as the council members did, that Claire would not receive a fair trial in a different pack than her own.

One of the people the newscaster was interviewing said, “Packs should take care of their own pack business, regardless of any alliance between them.” I didn’t recognize the interviewed man. It was possible the reporters just picked a protestor at random.

Frankly, I didn’t care what any of them had to say. They had a right to protest, of course, and could to their heart’s content. But that didn’t mean I had to give in.

I wouldn’t, not about this. For the best possible result, Jake had to be in the lead on this trial and judgement. My vow to the Moon Goddess likely meant I wasn’t capable of dealing with Claire as she deserved. Jake had no such restrictions.

Besides, Amelia was Jake’s sister, and some of Claire’s attacks had occurred on his pack lands. He had as much right as anyone to see this trial through.

I wouldn’t give in, and I knew neither would Jake.

I couldn’t wait for all of this to be over.

At least I had blocked those channels from Amelia, sparing her from seeing all of this.

Though, now, seeing the sheer number of protestors, I began to reflect on Keegan’s warnings once again.

This entire ordeal was sure now to be an even bigger spectacle than I had predicted. Maybe the pack would be buzzing about it more than I thought, which would mean that Keegan might be right. If the pack was buzzing, Amelia, now out and about much more than she had been in the past, was certain to hear about things.

I could only hope that the upcoming banquet went smoothly.

Keegan had recommended that I talked to Amelia, but I couldn’t do that. If I triggered a memory or two, and she remembered a thing or two more, it could be an entire house of cards that could start tumbling down. If she remembered too much… If she remembered everything…

I could lose her again.

No, telling her was out of the question.

But that didn’t mean there was nothing I could do. Instead, I could talk to the members of my pack about making certain to hold their tongues around my wife. I couldn’t talk to everyone, of course, but if I told a few trusted few and had them keep an ear out for others, that should be enough.

And if I made a few warnings…

Decided, I picked up the phone on my desk and started to make a few calls.

Soon, everyone would know: any conversation at the banquet regarding the trial was off-limits. If any conversation of the like was heard, especially by those of Jake’s pack, who I couldn’t warn or control, my pack were to directly change the subject.

This banquet was going to go smoothly, and Amelia was going to remain blissfully unaware of the darkest events of her past. I wasn’t going to leave anything to chance.

Amelia’s POV

The evening of the banquet, I set out a bit earlier than Damien, to make sure everything was prepared for the event as planned. Tonight was a child-free event, so the girls were already settled in with a babysitter.

Right now, I wanted to ensure that every event I was a part in went off without a hitch, but this one seemed particularly important, especially after how poorly the last banquet had ended.

Plus, this banquet was taking place fully in Damien’s pack lands, the place where so many people had treated me poorly in the past. I needed them to see, once and for all, that I knew what I was doing. That I was a good and capable Luna, and especially that I wasn’t going anywhere, even when things were difficult or challenging.

I wasn’t that weak-willed human anymore. I was a brave and bold werewolf, and I would see things through.

That was what I wanted to think, anyway.

Yet, as I sat in the backseat of a sedan, the driver taking us to the event hall, I happened to glance out the window and could have sword I saw that strange man again…

He was walking down the sidewalk, wearing a tuxedo, dressed up like he was going to attend the banquet.

Maybe I had been imagining things. I didn’t get a good look at his face this time, so I wasn’t positive it was the

same man.

Was I being paranoid?

I shook my head, trying to shake away any discomfort. I couldn’t let my imagination roam tonight. I needed to be on my A game.

By the time the car pulled out in front of the banquet hall, I’d mostly pushed the uncomfortable thoughts of that man from my mind. When I walked inside, the thoughts flew away entirely.

They were replaced with immediate annoyance.

Things were not as how I had left them earlier. Someone, or some ones, had come through after I had left to change most of the colors. The flower bouquets I had requested from Jake’s pack had been replaced with more from Damien’s.

I had a great banner made up that read, Welcome Jake and Damien’s Packs! It was gone entirely. Instead a large banner of the Damien pack crest was displayed alone, a clear matter of disrespect to those of Jake’s pack who might attend tonight.

As I was so early, the only other people that were already there were the servants, who wouldn’t have done this without command, and the pack wives. They stood in a circle, already drinking wine, chatting and laughing

among

themselves.

At once, I knew, this wasn’t just a sign of disrespect to Jake’s pack members. It was an act of disrespect against me, their own Luna.

They weren’t even really trying to hide it, smirking as I walked closer like they were proud to have pulled a fast

one over on me.
