His sheer conviction gave me pause. I was certain I was who I was, but why would he think something different? Was he really just unwell, or was there something more to all this?
Just what had happened in the past six years?
And why did he act like he hated me?
How could I have possibly humiliated him?
And what had he said… that we’d been… engaged?
None of it made sense.
“Amelia!” Damien called to me from across the room.
By now the danger had passed, but I still felt better when he appeared at my side and pulled me into the safety of his arms.
I was mad at myself for needing this comfort so much. I had wanted to prove to him that I was capable, that I could handle any situation as a Luna should, yet this encounter had left me shaken inside and out.
“Damien,” I whispered, hoping he could understand my inner fear just from the weight I put on his name.
He seemed to. With his arm around my shoulder, he led me away from the main of the group, to the walls of the banquet hall where there were several different sitting rooms attached. He found one that had been deemed just for us, our own personal escape if we ever needed it.
Entering the room, Damien asked the servants present to vacate, and then, when we were alone, closed and locked the door behind us.
He turned back to me, and held me once more.
I buried my face in his chest and breathed in the scent of him, trying to gather myself and my courage, hoping to rebuild the confidence I had felt earlier in the night, when I had stood up to the pack wives and set boundaries there.
Ian hadn’t been receptive to my kindness or my authority. He’d even grabbed me like he had some kind of right to it.
The ordeal was playing on repeat in my head, over and over. Yet no matter how many times I tried to analyze the situation, none of it made sense.
Damien kissed the top of my head. “I hate that he got that close to you. I should have been beside you. He never should have ever been able to touch you. Next time, we won’t separate. I’ll stay by your side as we mingle, no matter what.”
I didn’t like that he was using this situation as an opportunity to reassert his overprotectiveness, but given how frightened I was, in this moment, I didn’t argue with him. I just allowed him to hold me close as I tried to figure everything out.
Later, after I felt safe again, we could have a conversation about trust and allowing me the space to prove that I

was capable. For now, I just melted into his arms and allowed him to hold me closely.
“I saw he grabbed you,” Damien asked. Breaking our hug just a little, he traced his fingers down my arm to more lightly grab my arm. Gently, he tugged my arm up, so that he could see a better view of my wrist. It was still red from the force of Ian’s grip. “Did he hurt you?”
