Jake’s POV

I was already uncomfortable being this far into pack lands other than my own, but when I stepped out of the car, only to see Ian being forcibly removed from the banquet hall, that uncomfortableness amplified into outright

anger.

What was he even doing here? Had he attempted to confront Amelia? Knowing Damien, I highly doubted an invitation to Ian would have been extended.

Fury seething, I stormed forward from my car.

Ian, having been cast out of the banquet, was now thrown down on the ground. As he struggled to stand, I grabbed him by the shoulder and swung him around to face me.

Seeing me, he paled. “Alpha!” Though, in a flash, any fear he felt at seeing me vanished under an onslaught of his own fury. “Of course you would be here. Come to ensure my humiliation is complete?”

“I’m not here for you,” I growled, annoyed he would even think such a thing. “You matter so little to me, I barely think of you at all.”

His glare deepened, but I saw no reason to lie. I was still annoyed at how he had been treating Amelia when they had been dating. Everything after that had just been one irritation after the next. I was truly ready to exile this man entirely from my pack. If his family wasn’t so prominent, I might have done it long ago.

“Why did you come here, Ian? What did you hope to accomplish?” I asked him.

“What do you think?” he snapped in reply. “I had to meet this Amelia for myself, and see how much of a liar she is. She’s a good one too. She said she didn’t even recognize me. She told me she had amnesia. She said she didn’t know any Annette’s.”

“I told you to stay away from her,” I said. My hold tightened on his shoulder, my fingers turning into claws, digging in.

He winced but didn’t pull away. Instead, his own anger just seemed to raise, like he had any right to it.

He was an embarrassment to my pack. Rather than accept Amelia’s rejection and let her go, he had taken it far too personally, seeing it as an attack on him and his family. He’d allowed those feelings to fester into this ugly thing that he had become now, and couldn’t seem to do what was best for him, his family, and his entire pack – obey his Alpha and stay the hell away from Amelia.

“She’s a liar,” Ian said. “You all are. You just want to make me look bad -”

“I don’t care about you,” I said flatly. “No one here does. You are the only one bringing shame to your household. Not Amelia. Not anyone else. Just you.”

“You are threatened by me,” he said, continuing to spew nonsense.

Truly, I was tired of hearing it.

Waving to my own guards, they came closer. I noticed now, as I was considering others, that the press had taken interest in this exchange, snapping pictures and taking notes. Honestly, I couldn’t bring myself to care.

I was the Alpha of this man’s pack, and it was well within my rights to deal with him and his insolence however I sought fit. Right now, that meant getting him the hell out of here.

To my guards, I said, “Drag this man back to his own estate and drop him on his doorstep. Make sure he does not cross the border again.”

“You cannot keep me from revealing the truth about your family,” Ian said.

I shoved him roughly into the waiting custody of the guards.

“You will learn to shut your mouth about my family,” I growled, “Or I will exile you.”

Ian, at last seeing the very real threat I posed, finally closed his mouth. Yet as the guards dragged him away, he continued glaring at me.

I wondered if this wasn’t over, but I hoped, for his family’s sake and reputation, that it was.

With that matter handled, I stepped through the gathered crowd, ignoring the shouting questions of the press, and entered the banquet hall.

Damien’s POV

I hadn’t expected Ian to actually show up here, but now that he had, and now that he had called Amelia, Annette, everything I had worked hard to protect her from was dangerously close to the surface. It was clear that so far she didn’t remember Ian or her time living as Annette.

But that she had met him and learned those things spoke of a potential bridge to remembrance that I had been hoping to keep from forming. If she connected the dots on her own, if she started to remember things…

I didn’t know what would happen.

But right now, she was looking up at me with hope in her eyes, as if she expected me to reveal everything to her. She wanted to know who Annette was, which was just a gateway to more questions, I was sure, especially if I revealed the truth about it.

I didn’t like lying to Amelia, so for the moment she gave me to formulate an answer, I considered all the possible options. Was there some half-truths I could tell here? Something that wasn’t a lie but would be enough to sate her?

Knowing Amelia, I doubted it. If she knew part, she would want to know all.

In this case, lying to her might be the only thing I could really do.

“Annette was someone from Jake’s pack who happened to look very similar to you,” I said. “It caused some confusion for a while, with some people, like Ian. But it was only ever a coincidence.”

I leaned closer to a lie than the truth, but Amelia looked at me with trust and with love. I could see that she wanted to believe me, so she did.

An ache formed in my chest. I didn’t like that I was lying to her.

But it was for her own protection.

She opened her mouth like she had more questions. The last thing I wanted to have to do was lie to Amelia any
