Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 40

**Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah**
**Chapter 40**

“We’ll protect you, Amelia,” Jake asserted, his voice steady and filled with a conviction that resonated deep within me. It was clear he meant every word, though I grappled with my own doubts. “You and your unborn baby.”

A wave of guilt washed over me. I didn’t want to be selfish, to endanger this kind-hearted family who had taken me in. Yet, with my baby’s safety hanging in the balance, the thought of facing the world alone was terrifying.

What if Damien found me? What if he dragged me back into that nightmare?

Maybe Clair and Victoria had been spinning tales, but I couldn’t afford to gamble with my child’s life.

I couldn’t allow anyone to take my baby from me.

Today had felt like a cruel game orchestrated by Damien, a ploy to lure me back so he could “handle” the situation with the baby. The mere thought of it sent a sharp pang of anguish through my heart.

I had loved Damien fiercely, so much that I would have sacrificed everything for him. But not this.

Not our child.

I had to keep hiding, to lean on the kindness and protection offered by Jake, his parents, and the entire pack.

“I’ll stay,” I finally declared, and relief washed over the faces of Jake and his family.

**Jake’s POV**

After my mother led Amelia upstairs to rest, my father and I retreated to the study, the weight of the day’s events still heavy on my shoulders. Martin, my father, immediately poured himself a generous glass of bourbon from the dry bar. I could understand his need for a drink after what we had just faced. But when he offered me a glass, I declined with a firm shake of my head.

As Alpha, clarity was essential. I had tried my best to calm Amelia’s fears, but deep down, I wrestled with my own uncertainty. Damien’s words had carried an unsettling weight, and the desperation in his eyes as he searched for Amelia was alarming. He had appeared almost feral, as if he would stop at nothing—even instigating a war—to reclaim her.

I needed to keep my mind sharp and be prepared for whatever might come.

“She’s headstrong,” my father cautioned. “And she’ll likely rebel against any punishment we impose. I’m not suggesting we shouldn’t punish her; her actions certainly warrant it. I just want you to be ready for the fallout.”

It was amusing, in a twisted way, that I could face the looming threat of war with another pack with the courage of a lion, yet the idea of confronting my sister left me feeling uneasy.

Maybe it was because she was family. We were supposed to stand united. For her to turn against us in such a perilous manner…

What kind of punishment could possibly reach her?

Then it struck me. “We could reduce her allowance.”

As soon as the words left my mouth, I heard a faint rustle at the door. A quick sniff of the air confirmed my suspicion—Sienna had been lurking nearby, likely eavesdropping.

I let out a resigned sigh. My father was right; this was not going to be straightforward.
