Chapter 400

Damien’s POV

+25 Bonus

Something was going on with Amelia, but I didn’t know what. And unless she wanted to tell me about it, I didn’t think I’d be able to pry it from her. So I accepted the things she said, we continued to have a good evening, talking and playing with the girls. I even held her through the night as she gently rested against my chest. Even with her so close, however, I was starting to feel a rift form between us like a small

canyon.

I worried she was starting to remember things, but I had no way of asking her about it, not without revealing that our past didn’t have as much sunshine and rainbows as I wished it had.

For now, all I could do was play along. If she wanted to pretend she was fine, then I had to pretend too, as I nervously waited for the truth to be revealed.

So I got up in the morning, put myself together as per usual, kissed Amelia goodbye – at least she promised to stay home today – and went to the office to look after the pack.

I had barely sat down when my phone started to ring. Through the open door of my office, I saw Keegan looking at me nervously, gesturing to his own phone which he held in his hand.

I picked up the handset and brought it to my ear. “Keegan? What is it?”

“An urgent call for you, Alpha,” Keegan said.

“Urgent?”

“It’s the Alpha King,” Keegan said.

I immediately tensed. For the Alpha King himself to call meant this was urgent indeed. Usually, he had his servants and staff attend to his business. If he was calling directly, he likely intended to yell at me. As he was Alpha King, I had to accept whatever it was he was going to say.

“I’m ready,” I said. “Patch him through.’

))

“Yes, Alpha,” Keegan said. I watched through the open door as he pushed a few buttons on his own phone, then lowered the handset, hanging up his line. The line I was on clicked and I knew I was now connected with Alpha King Benedict.

“Alpha King, good morning,” I said.

“Don’t attempt to butter me up, Damien. I want to know why I am only now hearing that my beloved niece is alive and well with her memories intact,” Benedict said, annoyance clear in his clipped words and stern tone.

His annoyance triggered mine as well. Yes, I should have alerted him, but I wasn’t the only one who knew. Martin was Benedict’s own brother, and Jake his nephew. Either of them could have clued their own family member in.

Even so, I would shoulder the blame if that was what the Alpha King required of me.

It wasn’t like I had much choice.

“I apologize,” I said. “I imagine we were waiting to make sure that Amelia is well, and there have been other

matters to attend to. I’m sure you’ve heard about the trial.”

“Yes,” Benedict replied. “I didn’t know Claire, but I knew her family. Hard to believe they could have produced a child like this.” He cleared his throat. “Even so, I should have been alerted.”

“Well, I said. There are other complications, as well.”

“Such as?”

“Her memory.”

“I was told that her memory has been restored.”

“It has, Alpha King,” I said. “In part.”

“Which part?”

“She remembers up until the day she discovered she was pregnant,” I said, seeing no reason to lie here.” Everything after that, until a month ago, she has entirely forgotten. That’s six years, she doesn’t remember, including her time living in Jake’s pack, both as herself and as Annette.”
