“I see,” Benedict said, and then sighed. “That does complicate matters, but it is not a good enough excuse to keep me from my niece. Also, I’ve heard that you’ve recently formed a stronger alliance with Jake’s pack. I was also not invited to the banquet celebrating this?”

“I apologize,” I said. The truth was, with so much on my mind, the Alpha King was far from my thoughts. In hindsight, I wasn’t sure I would have invited him even if I had thought of him. His presence would have completely commandeered the purpose of the event.

The Alpha King didn’t just attend events. He was the event.

“Yes, well, to make this up to me, I expect a grand event on my next visit, planned by your Luna,” he said. “I expect this to all occur within one month’s time.”

There was nothing I could say to deter him from this. He wasn’t asking, he was telling me what was going to happen. As Alpha King, his authority surpassed my own, as a pack Alpha.

“Yes, Alpha King.”

“Very good,” Benedict said. “My people will be in touch.”

With that, he hung up the phone.

I exhaled harshly, taking a moment to collect myself. A discussion with the Alpha King was no easy matter, even for a call as short as this. I hadn’t forgotten the way he had been ready to see me executed.

Shaking the cold memories from my mind, I picked up the phone and called Amelia, knowing she would want to start planning right away.

Maybe this was a good thing. If she had a different task to focus on, perhaps she could let go of whatever she was remembering and allow those memories to fade into the background.

What did they matter now, anyway, when our future was so bright?

Amelia’s POV

After hearing the exciting news that the Alpha King was going to visit, I called a meeting with the pack wives at once to start planning the event. With such an honored guest, and such a short time to prepare, we needed to make use of every spare moment to ensure this event went well.

At the meeting, all of the women shared in my excitement. This time, we all agreed that gold should be our primary color, in honor of the Alpha King. It was nice to work in tandem with the women, instead of against

them like last time.

This time, they even seemed to respect me a bit more, listening carefully as I spoke, and offering suggestions in a more understanding sort of way.

Things were going so smoothly, I almost felt like I was having an out of body experience…

Until one of the women said, “Since you are the King’s niece, Luna, I’m sure this will be a nice reunion for you.”

I froze.
