Chapter 403
Damien’s POV
“Excuse me?” I said, my voice cold as ice crept over my body.
I couldn’t have heard that right, despite the anger in Jake’s tone. There was no way Claire and Sienna could have escaped their jail cells. They were finally caught. They were facing justice.
Now they were both free.
“You heard me,” Jake said.
“Tell me you are joking,” I said. It would be a sick joke, but I’d rather that than this be the truth.
“I’m not,” Jake said. “Someone unassuming came to the jail last night. A visitor, though the guards can’t remember her face, only remembering that it seemed to be a woman.”
“How can they not remember?” I demanded, my anger flaring now, working in tandem with the ice inside of me, ice and fire bonding and raging.
“They were knocked unconscious. Knock-out powder, our detectives believe. Remnants of it are being evaluated in our labs as we speak. It seems like some kind of home brew, perhaps made by a witch.”
“An actual witch? Come on, Jake.”
“I’m telling you what we know and what we suspect,” Jake said. “If our alliance isn’t just bullshit, you will want to hear all this.”
I did want to hear it, but I also wanted real, effective answers. “So they knocked out your guards and just walked out. What does it show on the cameras?”
“The camera feeds were tampered with,” Jake said.
“What the hell kind of two-bit operation are you running over there? How could you not put the very best security on this?” My temper was flaring, my rage riding high. It was difficult to keep my voice level, and I was already tired of trying. “How could you let this happen?!”
“Every single person at that facility was someone that I had vetted personally and trust with my life,” Jake said. “Whatever went down there, it wasn’t their fault.”
“Then whose fault was it?” I snapped. “No, I don’t give a shit whose fault it was. What I want to know now is what the hell you are going to do about it?”
“I have most of my enforcers on a manhunt,” Jake said. “But you should have yours patrolling too. I imagine Claire and Sienna might attempt to cross the border to be closer to Amelia. They might try for revenge.’
“I’ll tell you whose fault this is,” I said, back on that even with my efforts to move on. “It’s yours, Jake.”
“Don’t act so damn high and mighty, Damien,” Jake snapped. “The same thing would have happened if they were in your pack. Or, maybe instead, you would have just let them go.”
“I wouldn’t -”

“Do I need to remind you of how soft your punishment was on Claire,” Jake said cruelly. “If you had done the right thing years ago, we wouldn’t be facing this now. You can blame me all you want, but the fact is, you are just
as much to blame.”
Shit, he was right, and I hated it. I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down. As the anger subsided somewhat, fear filled its place.
My blame in all this wasn’t the only thing Jake was right about. With those two free, they likely would be trying to come here, trying to get to Amelia for their revenge. I couldn’t allow that to happen.
My protective instincts kicked up to one hundred, and before I knew it, I was ready to get off this phone call and return to my mate’s side.
“I’ll take care of things here,” I said. “We’ll reconvene later.”
