The house was in view before long, and I could see Amelia just as she stepped out of the front door, her folders and notebooks in her hands. She must have been on her way to a planning session.
In a flash, I was standing before her, blocking her from the driveway. In another flash, I returned to my human form and coaxed her gently back into the house, my hands on her shoulders.
“Damien? What’s going on?”
I didn’t explain, couldn’t even speak until she was hidden away in the foyer with the door locked and closed
behind us.
“Damien,” she said again, with concern and fear rising in her voice. “Talk to me, please.”
I moved to the windows then, drawing closed the curtains. “Close all the curtains in the house,” I said to the servants. “And call for more guards. I want every inch of this place protected.”
Amelia followed me into the living room. “Please,” she said. As I tried to walk by her, she placed her hand on my arm, stopping me. “You are scaring me. Tell me what’s happening.”
I forced myself to slow, to explain – at least, as much as I could with my protective instincts going absolutely haywire.
“Claire and Sienna have escaped prison,” I said. “They both resent you, so you are likely to be their next target. You have to stay inside and stay protected.”
Confusion added to the swirl of emotions on Amelia’s face.
“I don’t understand,” she said. “What happened with them? Why do they hate me so much? Why would they come after me?”
I didn’t have time to deal with this, not to comfort her or to properly explain or to even think of a good lie. All I cared about in this moment was keeping her safe.
“They both hate you. They’ve tried to kill you in the past, and I’m worried they are going to try to make another effort.”
“Sienna’s picture was in the family portrait at Jake’s estate,” she said. “She’s family. And Claire… I barely remember her. Are you sure they hate me? Why would they? What could have possible happened in the past six years that would make them want me dead? Did I do something?”
“Absolutely not,” I said. I needed to calm down, at least long enough to offer comfort. My mate was in distress and she needed me. I had to be her rock, her lighthouse in this storm of fear and uncertainty. As long as I stayed by her side, she wouldn’t be hurt. I was here. I would protect her.
With that mantra, I was able to calm myself down, at least enough to take her hands in mine and do my best to try to help her.
“You didn’t do anything,” I told her. “You are perfect. It was their own jealousies of you and your perfection that drove them to committing such terrible acts. Do not let them affect you. Do not let them change you. Jake and I will find them and stop them, and then we can finally forget all about them.”
