Chapter 405
Amelia’s POV
Damien looked at me for a moment, and I held my breath. It really seemed like he might actually answer me this time and tell me something that would help ease my troubled mind.
Obviously, I had missed a lot, if Sienna and Claire had both tried to kill me more than once. I knew, in my heart, that Damien just wanted to protect me from the past, but I wished to the Moon Goddess that he would just trust me to be able to handle whatever it was that he was keeping from me.
My past was a part of me. Didn’t I have a right to it?
Yet, too quickly, the moment passed, and Damien looked away from me, his mind already moved on from me. “I need to get in contact with the school. It’s imperative that the girls return home and stay home for their own safety.”
“They need to go to school,” I said. I didn’t have the full story, and I was worried about the girls. But they couldn’t just miss their schooling. Part of being a parent was ensuring that our children were given a good education. “They need their education. They are at an impressionable age.”
“We’ll hire a tutor,” Damien said. “And a guard can sit with them to be sure it all runs smoothly.” He already had his hand on his phone and his phone to his ear. “But you have to agree how dangerous it is to just have them out there where anything can happen to them – yes, hello. Yes, this is Alpha Damien.”
Apparently, this was the end of his conversation with me. Or at least, that was what it seemed like he would prefer.
I was stubborn though, and waited him out as he spoke with the school and then spoke with his guards about retrieving the girls and bringing them here.
I supposed, with the girls, I could understand this level of protection. They were vulnerable, and they could be tutored here well enough. And as long as this confinement didn’t last too long, it shouldn’t overly affect their developing social skills. As things would progress, I would make sure to bring this up with Damien and maybe we could have a playdate with some of the girls’ friends.
Surely Damien wouldn’t think young girls could be minions of Claire and Sienna.
But that still left the matter of me, and what he expected me to do with all this.
“Damien,” I said, trying to patient, as he hung up the phone. He started to walk away without acknowledging me, so I raised my voice. “Damien, don’t ignore me.’
He froze in his tracks, and then, slowly, turned around to face me.
“I’m not trying to,” he said, but his face was hard.
“Then, please,” I said. “Hear me out.”
He looked like he wanted to do anything but, his face all scrunched up. But he forced himself to take a breath, easing out discomfort. It was a struggle for him, I could tell, like he was pushing against his nature. I appreciated his effort, even if it frustrated me.

I wouldn’t press my luck, and quickly said what I needed to say.
“I can’t be a prisoner in my own home, Damien,” I said. “Especially not now, with the Alpha King’s visit coming up. I need to be out there, fulfilling my responsibility, planning things.”
He closed his eyes a moment and exhaled again, deep and slow. “I’m not trying to be… overbearing… with you, Amelia. But staying here is for your own good. The Alpha King will understand the delay.”
From what little I knew about the Alpha King, I wasn’t sure if that was true.
Damien continued, “If something happened to you, I would never forgive myself.”
