Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 407

Chapter 407

Jake’s POV

My guards and I had spent much of the day searching for the two escapees. We looked in the most obvious places, parks and gyms where they could shower and change without too much notice or commotion. We checked train stations and bus depots, where they could easily make an escape.

Finally, we searched through the houses of acquaintances and old friends. We worked closely with Damien and his enforcers as they searched through houses and estates on that side of the border. We stayed with the locations on our side.

Which was what led me to lan’s estate late in the afternoon.

The servants must have seen me coming at a distance, because when I reached the door, it was Ian who opened it, and he looked very annoyed.

I was used to seeing that expression on his face, after helping Amelia break up with him all those months ago now. Yet to see him also blocked the door with his body, his hand tight on the doorknob to keep it from opening too far, filled me with suspicion I might not have otherwise felt.

Perhaps, given his recent humiliations and his connection to Sienna, I should have come here first.

We’d been trying to keep the truth of what happened under wraps, not yet releasing to the press that Sienna and Claire had escaped. The less the public knew, we thought, the better. If Claire and Sienna thought they had gotten away with it, they might leave room for mistakes.

Yet Ian was looking at me like he knew exactly why I was here. It could have been that those who owned the houses we inspected had begun to gossip amongst themselves. But it was just as likely that Ian knew why we were here because he was hiding something.

“What do you want, Alpha Jake?” Ian asked flatly.

“My enforcers and I need to inspect your property,” I replied in an equally flat tone.

“My property? Why?”

“We’re looking for someone,” I said.

“Who?” Ian asked.

He was pushing my patience. “I’m not at liberty to say,” I said, “And as Alpha, I don’t have to explain myself.”

Ian huffed. “You really are trying my patience. Is this further humiliation from you against my family?”

“Just let me inside,” I said. I wasn’t going to fall into this argumentative trap. “We will inspect and we will leave. This doesn’t need to be more than that.”

Ian scoffed next. “Well, I don’t have a right to refuse you, it seems.” He stepped back, opening the door wider for me and my men. “Though I will tell you now, whatever if it is you think you will find here, you will not.”

“I’ll be the judge of that,” I said.

Behind my back, he muttered, “You want to be the judge of everything, it seems.”

Ignoring him, I walked into his foyer, with three enforcers behind me, one of which was in his wolf form. What we were primarily searching for, as well as any obvious incriminating evidence, was scent.

We had each taken time to sniff and learn Claire and Sienna’s scents so that we would properly detect even the faintest trace of them. Even while Ian and I had been talking outside, two more of my enforcers had been casing the entire property, sniffing and searching.

A howl would be our giveaway, a tell to the others that a clue had been found.

So far, there had been no howling today.

I hoped this trip would change that.
