Chapter 408
If she was awake, I bet she would have straightened out her son. She was a stern woman, tough but fair. She wouldn’t have thought kindly about lan’s obsession with Amelia.
I wouldn’t put it past lan to hide fugitives in his sickly mother’s room. But alas, none of us detected any strange
scents there.
Leaving the room, we continued down the hall. To my great frustration, even after searching the entire house, we could find no trace of the two fugitives.
lan stood where we had left him in the foyer. His arms were crossed and his expression somewhat smug.
“I told you, you wouldn’t find what you were looking for,” he said. “Are you done harassing my family now?”
I didn’t say anything to him. I just walked out of the house.
Ian’s POV
Of course, Jake wouldn’t admit he was wrong or offer any kind of apology. Not even an explanation.
Alphas like him were the worst kind, so ungrateful for all the prominent families of the pack and how they supported him. Instead, he wanted to cater only to his own family and the small group of yes-men he surrounded himself with.
It was past time for a change in the world order of things. Jake really needed to be overthrown.
But that was a hope for a future time. Right now, I had more pressing matters to attend to. I closed and locked the front door, then turned to face the hallway Jake and his goons had just walked out of.
My servants were nearby, quiet and still as the grave. I made a mental note to increase all of their pay. Their loyalty to me over their failed Alpha would be rewarded.
One of the doors in the hall was a closet. Jake had opened this door, sniffed inside, and then closed it again. He didn’t look very closely, but even if he had, it was doubtful he would have seen the hidden latch on the shelf, hidden behind old paint cans and cleaning supplies.
Even if he had seen it, he likely would have thought it only a groove in the old wooden shelf. He wouldn’t have known to place his fingers along the smooth edges and pull.
I did so now, and a secret door popped open, revealing a small compartment where Sienna, Claire, and the servant Ruth had been hiding inside. I helped them out of the space, offering them my hand one by one. Then, we avoided any rooms with windows as I escorted them down into the basement where they could stretch more comfortably. There were more secret hiding spots down here if Jake or his goons were to show up again.
As the women made themselves more comfortable, Sienna turned to me.
“Thank you, Ian,” she said sweetly, batting her eyelashes. “For everything.”
“I’m merely giving you a harbor,” I told her, then gestured to Ruth. “She is the one who plotted your escape.’
We all looked at Ruth who stared blankly back.
“Yes,” Claire said. “Why would you put your neck out and save us, anyway? You’re just a servant right? Do you
