Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 410

Chapter 410

Amelia’s POV

I took a moment in the bedroom to compose myself. If I didn’t want Damien to know that I had been eavesdropping on his call with the Alpha King and my brother, than I would need to do some very good acting. Better acting than I probably had ever done before in my life.

I was feeling fractured. I had so many pieces of what happened in the past but no way to put them all together. With Damien avoiding all of my questions, I didn’t know if I would ever be able to uncover the truth, unless I could remember on my own.

I came back downstairs just as Damien was leaving his office. When he saw me, he came toward me, wrapped his arms around me and kissed me gently on the mouth.

“I have to leave for a while,” he said. “I want to help the search party myself.”

“I could help,” I said. “I’m sure there’s some way I could -”

He kissed me again, softly, but like he was trying to quiet me. “No. You just stay here and try not to worry. I don’t want you to have to worry about this at all.”

I didn’t like this, being forced to stay at home while he went out and put himself in danger to try to fix this. If the pack was being threatened, then I wanted to help however I could.

I had changed so much since I was that frightened human of the past. I was a confident Luna now. But Damien was still making me feel like I was helpless.

Weren’t Alphas supposed to depend on their Lunas? Couldn’t Damien depend on me?

Damien kissed me again and then walked out the door. I stayed home as he wanted, watching the girls study or trying to plan remotely, with the pack wives on the phone.

I didn’t like delegating the work like this. I knew how much these women wanted to undermine me. But to be true to my husband, I didn’t have much choice.

When the girls had finished with their tutoring, they came out and sat with me on the couch. All of the television channels were blocked, so I hadn’t even bothered turning it on. Right now, the three of us just stared at the wall like zombies would, uncertain and unhappy.

“Mommy,” Stacy asked after a moment. “Where’s Daddy?”

“He had to go out,” I said. “He might be gone a while.” I didn’t think that was any kind of breaking revelation. Their father was the Alpha, so that meant that he was gone a lot, handling pack business. I didn’t know how much they knew, but I wasn’t going to help scare them even more than they already were.

“Mommy,” Amy said, softer. “Is Claire coming to get us?”

I froze. So the girls were little eavesdroppers. I wished I could condemn that behavior, but I was just as guilty of

“It’s not us she would be after, Amy,” Stacy said. “It’s me.”

I glanced at her. “Why would you think that, Stacy?”

Stacy clamped her mouth shut and looked down.

“Stacy?” I pressed.

“No reason,” she answered, and it was clearly a lie. Now, just like their father, even my own children were lying to me. They were only six years old. They shouldn’t want to keep secrets from their mother. Unless they had been put up to it by other members of the family.

I sunk further into myself, into my own misery, feeling not just like a helpless Luna but also like a failure as a mother.

I couldn’t even protect my daughters from their own fears – fears they didn’t want to share with me.
