Chapter 409
Damien’s POV

There was another call I needed to make, but I waited until Amelia was busy before I made it. I knew she wouldn’t approve and I didn’t want to upset her more than she was already upset.
Once she was busy with the children, I stepped into my office in the estate, closing and locking the door behind me. There, I made my call to the Alpha King. Speaking with one of his staff, I told them, “We need to make some changes to the Alpha King’s visit.”
“What should I tell His Highness the reason is?” the staff member asked.
“It’s a matter of extreme secrecy at the moment,” I said.
The staff member clucked their tongue. I knew, without them even having to say so, that the Alpha King was not going to be happy about that.
“I presume you wish to push back the visit, not bring it closer,” the staff member said.
“Yes,” I said.
The staff member hummed. “I will tell him, but I would stay near my phone if I were you. I think it is fair to anticipate a call from the Alpha King himself regarding this.”
“I understand,” I said.
Though I found this exchange less than professional, I could at least appreciate the staff member’s candor.
In the time after hanging up the phone, I could at least attempt to prepare for dealing with an angry Alpha King. I just hoped he didn’t try to have me executed again.
He wouldn’t… right? No. Surely.
I only waited ten minutes before the phone rang. Picking it up, I was surprised to find myself in a group call, with Jake and Benedict already talking.
“They were being guarded by my very best-” Jake was trying to say.
Alpha King Benedict cut him off. “Your very best should have never allowed this to happen. Honestly, Jake, at this moment, I am ashamed to call you my nephew. Those two girls tried to manipulate all of us to kill Amelia, and you just let them go. Damien? Damien are you there now?”
I didn’t want to speak, already hearing how furious the king was, but I knew staying quiet would only make things worse for me. “Yes, I’m here,” I said.
“You are both nincompoops,” Benedict growled. “How are you unable to contain this problem?”
“This only just happened,” I said. “We are taking measures -”
“I don’t want to hear about your measures,” Benedict said. “I want to hear how you are going to capture those two and protect my niece.”
“Amelia and the children are being kept at my estate,” I said. “I have guards

“That’s not enough,” Benedict said, not letting me finish. I imagined this was how Jake felt when I had first entered the call, unable to get a word in edgewise with the King’s fiery anger.
“I will give you until my already planned visit time to clean up your mess,” Benedict said.
“It would be better to postpone the banquet,” I said, daring to be contradictory. A banquet meant that Amelia would need to plan, which meant she would try to leave the house. Why couldn’t the King understand it was better for her if he just waited?
The King continued on, like I hadn’t said anything. “My visit will remain scheduled as it was. And I will be giving you two until that time to clean up this mess. If you can’t, then I will clean it up for you. Do you understand?”
As it was the Alpha King, though technically in charge of every pack in his kingdom, allowed the day to day reign to be ruled by the pack Alphas like Jake and myself. If he were to step in and take charge of a specific pack, it would be to undermine the authority of that pack Alpha, humiliating them and likely usurping them. The King would then leave another Alpha in charge.
I wasn’t going to lose my pack, my authority, or my mate.
“I want to hear you both tell me you understand,” Benedict said.
“I understand,” Jake said first.
“Me too,” I replied.
“Good. Then I don’t want to hear from either of you again until those two fugitives are caught or dead.” Benedict hung up then, likely slamming the phone down. Though he had disappeared from the call, I was still connected with Jake.
“He’s not giving us much time,” I said. The main event had been planned for two weeks from now.
“No,” Jake said. “And I’ve already exhausted my most obvious leads. Genuinely, it as if their scent had just… vanished. It makes no sense.”
“You said the accomplice used homemade knock-out powder to stop the guards. Is there something they could have used similarly to hide their scent?”
“I don’t know,” Jake admitted. “I have the chemists working on it, but some of the methods here are archaic. Old magic, maybe.”
“Great,” I said sarcastically and pushed a hand through my hair. “How did it go at Ian’s?”
“Nothing,” Jake said. “And I went myself. I’ve been joining most of the search parties.”
Not to be outdone, I said, “I’ll join mine too. I trust them, but we need everyone on hand for this.”
“We can try to coordinate as we’ve been doing,” Jake said. “But I’m not sure how much good it will do. They are likely hiding until the heat dies down.”
“Then we won’t let the heat die down,” I said. “If we can keep them in hiding…”
“That won’t work forever,” Jake reminded me. “We only have two weeks.”
I cursed. With that line of thinking, it almost seemed like we needed to pull back on the pressure, rather than

pushing forward with it. But to do that would allow for more opportunities for them to slip through our fingers.
I couldn’t risk Amelia, not even for the sake of maintaining control over my pack.
“We have time before we need to do anything drastic,” I said. “For now, let’s just keep searching,”
“Fine,” Jake said.
“Fine,” I replied, and we both hung up.
