Chapter 415

Amelia’s POV

I was so annoyed after getting off the phone with the pack wives, that I had a wild idea of storming down to the banquet hall myself and giving them a piece of my mind in person. Oh, I’d love to see the surprised looks on their face as I walked through the door and absolutely tore into their new unofficial color palettes.

It would be so very gratifying to hear them have to apologize to me for hanging up on me. Gods, I wanted to look at that phone and see just how many bars she had. Dropping signal, yeah right. No way.

However, as much fun as it was to imagine this, I knew it was only wild fantasy. One look toward the front door told me all I needed to know about the unlikeliness of this actually happening.

A guard was stationed there, just inside the door, with another one on the outside. Through the windows, I could see a whole contingent of guards swarming the property, patrolling, watching. They were there to keep me safe, to stop anyone from trying to break into the house to do me or the kids harm.

But a secondary directive was likely to keep me inside.

I could recognize that in here, I was easier to keep safe. But a consequence of that, of course, was that I was made a prisoner inside of my own home, unable to leave because of ‘safety’.

I didn’t want to cause Damien any undue stress, or put the girls in any kind of danger, so I’d agreed to this kind of protection for now. But it was quickly losing its charm, and I was losing my patience.

I was Luna, and I had a job to do, planning the Alpha King’s visit. I was quickly learning this kind of thing couldn’t be done remotely – at least, not with staff I didn’t trust. And the pack wives were far from people I would consider trustworthy.

At least to me, they seemed like they wanted to humiliate me.

I’d seem similar things in the past, when I had been thought to be only human. Constantly I had been walked on and ignored. Now that I had a wolf, even dormant, I expected to be treated with more respect. But if I couldn’t confront them directly, I had no idea how I was supposed to stand up for myself.

None of this, I supposed, was as important as staying safe. My life, and the lives of my children, were more valuable than my reputation. But I hated that I couldn’t have both.

Just to be sure, I walked up to the guard. He seemed polite enough, nodding to me as I approached.

“I have a question,” I said.

“Yes, ma’am?”

“If I wanted to leave… If I tried to. Would you have to stop me?”

He nodded. “I’m sorry, ma’am, but yes. We are under orders to keep you in this house.”

I considered this. “I assume the Alpha gave these orders?”

“Alpha Damien, yes,

ma’am.”

“And if I could get him to rescind those orders, you would allow me to leave?” I asked.

“Yes, ma’am, but that seems unlikely, ma’am. My apologies.”

He was right, that did seem unlikely, especially since Damien still hadn’t been home.

“Thank you,” I told him, and walked away. Grabbing my phone, I unlocked it and called Damien’s number.

I was loathe to bother him while he was on the hunt, but… I was worried. If he wasn’t going to come home, then at least a five minute phone call shouldn’t be unreasonable. I just wanted to make sure he was okay, as well as see how things were going.
