Chapter 414
Sienna’s POV
Even with mostly staying in the basement of Ian’s estate, at least during the day, things were very comfortable. His mansion was almost as big as Jake’s and the food was good. Claire, Ruth, and I each had our own rooms down here. And at night, when the curtains were closed in the rest of the house, we could venture upstairs.
All of us knew the estate was being watched by Jake’s enforcers. Even with our scents hidden, Jake didn’t trust Ian at all, something that lan resented and complained about often.
Despite the space and the general comforts of the estate, the tensions between lan, Claire, Ruth, and myself were high and getting worse all the time.
On top of everything else, I was still trying to get my head around the idea that Ruth, one of my family’s oldest servants, was actually my mother. He hadn’t really talked about it yet. Ruth stayed quiet most of the time.
But in the longer daytime moments when we couldn’t go upstairs or do much other than watch television or look at each other, my curiosity began to take hold of me.
Once, when I was sitting next to Ruth on the couch, the television on but muted, no one really watching it, I glanced at her, and asked, “How is it that you can be my mother?”
Ruth looked at me. She had an unnerving way about her, especially in how she held my gaze. Her focus was so intense that it made me want to look away, afraid she might see too much of me. But, this time, I held that gaze, unwilling to turn away.
I wanted to know the truth, and I’d be unnerved if that was what it took to learn it.
“I became pregnant around the same time as Lillian,” Ruth said. “It wasn’t so difficult to switch the babies at birth.”
“But why would you do it?” I asked. Though I wasn’t thrilled about the prospect of being a servant’s daughter, that would have been ideal compared to the rejection that I know felt.
Lillian hadn’t wanted me, choosing Amelia at the first chance. And now, I was learning that I had been rejected not just by one mother, but by two, when Ruth had also given me up before I even knew who she really was.
“What kind of life would I have been able to provide for you?” Ruth said. “You deserved better than what I could give. You deserved to live a more privileged life as an Alpha’s daughter.”
I snorted a harsh, bitter laugh. “It didn’t work out that way. The minute Amelia came back into the picture, I was shoved so quickly to the side, I got whiplash. I’m still feeling it.”
“Yes,” Ruth said and glowered, her eyes taking on a darker hue. Her face remained mostly passive, but in her eyes, the truth of her anger burned hot like the heart of a wildfire. “I had sacrificed so much to give you that birthright, and in a moment, some stranger came in and ruined it all.”
I gaped at her a little, surprised that she hadn’t fallen under Amelia’s spell as easily as everyone else had seemed to. “She’s well liked,” I said.
“She’s new,” Ruth said. “And when she came, she was vulnerable. You were never so weak, and they resented you for it.” She shook her head. “Never again, my darling daughter. You will not be cast aside from your fate

again.”
Oddly, her words warmed me. Yes, she had given me up, but I could see at least what she had been trying to do, and I could respect her for that. She had wanted me to live a better life, even if Amella had turned up and ruined everything.
It seemed like Ruth was still trying, for my sake. That was why she had busted me out of jail and now sat down beside me on this couch, in hiding.
While I didn’t know if I’d ever be happy to have a servant as my birth mother, I could at least feel comfort in what she had tried to do, and what she was still trying to do for me..
This conversation only piqued my curiosity about some other things, though. Like…
“Ruth,” I said.
“Yes, daughter?”
“If you are my mother, then who is my father?”
For the first time, she looked away. I felt the conversation close as surely as if she had shut a door between us. ” Do not ask me that.”
“Why?” I pressed.
“It doesn’t matter now,” she said. With that, she stood and walked away from me.
My curiosity only grew.
Amelia’s POV
Since I couldn’t leave the house but still had a banquet to plan with the Alpha King’s visit set in stone, I had to coordinate the planning from a distance. This meant relying on the pack wives to be my eyes and ears, something that I hated, especially as time went on.
I’d already sent them images of color palettes that I thought appropriate.
“I don’t think the colors on the images are the same on my phone screen as they are on yours,” said one of the wives. She sent me back a different photo. The colors in this one were not even close to the same as the one I sent. “Maybe you’d prefer something like this instead?”
“I didn’t want any green,” I told her. “Where did the green come from? Purpose is a regal color. That is what Alpha King Benedict would likely prefer.”
“Green is the color of nature,” the wife said. “And I think this shade of mauve is particularly charming and whimsical.”
Since when does an aging King care about whimsy?
“I can negotiate on a darker, forest green. But absolutely no mauve,” I said.
“Well, I’ll make up the swatches, and then you will see.”
“That’s a waste of time, money, and resources,” I said. “Do the purple.”
