Sienna’s POV
Claire and I sneaked back inside before we could be spotted. By now, Tan, who must have heard the opening and closing of the door, was hurrying down the stairs.
“Are you out of your minds? What were you doing outside?” tan demanded.
“We were watching a traitor,” Claire snapped.
Claire, it seemed had already made up her mind about what my mother was doing out there talking to a rogue, but I wasn’t so easily convinced, especially after the things Ruth had said to me tonight. She had tried to connect with me in a way only a mother could. I didn’t fully believe her, but I wanted to.
Could she have meant those things, if she was secretly planning to betray us? Why help us escape at all, if she only meant to get us right back into trouble?
“We need to talk to her,” I said. “I’m sure she has an explanation.”
“What explanation could there possibly be for sneaking out to talk with a rogue in the middle of the night?” Claire demanded. “She’s plotting to betray us. There can be no other explanation.”
“You are paranoid,” I said. “You always think everyone is out to get you.”
“I’m usually right,” Claire snapped.
Ian stepped between us. Placing a hand on each of our shoulders, he pushed us apart. “Someone had better explain to me just what is going on.”
The door opened again, and Ruth entered this time. Glancing at all of us, with us staring at her, she sighed. “I thought I saw you two hiding there.”
“You have to explain,” Ian said. “These two are saying you met with a rogue? On my property? While we are being hunted and watched by Jake and his men. Are you out of your mind?”
“It was important,” Ruth said.
“I hardly see how,” Ian said.
“Unless she is sabotaging us,” Claire said.
“She isn’t sabotaging us. That doesn’t make sense. I’m sure she has an explanation.”
Ruth looked at me with some appreciation, but Claire and Ian weren’t convinced.
“Answers,” Ian said flatly. “Now.”
“I don’t owe you anything,” Ruth said.
Ian glowered at her. “I’m the one keeping your daughter safe. Maybe you should consider that.’

Ruth looked at me, as if seeking permission. I didn’t know what she would need my permission for, but I nodded anyway. “Might as well tell them,” I said. “I’m not sure they will trust you otherwise.”

“For you,” Ruth said. “I will share some of what I was doing.”
Ruth looked down for a moment as if gathering her thoughts. Everyone waited, some more patiently than others. Claire crossed her arms. Ian continued to glare like Ruth had personally offended him.
Finally, Ruth spoke again. “I have been a spy for the rogues, planted inside of Alpha Jake’s household for many years. I keep my eyes and ears open and pass off knowledge to help aid the rogues. Jake and his father have always been very trusting of their servants, so I have had access to all the information I’ve needed to help the rogues evade capture as well as to build their own strength.”
“So you are a traitor,” Claire said.
Ruth gave her a pointed look. She also reminded her, “You seem to forget that your brother is among those that I conspire to protect, Claire.”
Claire closed her mouth and lowered her head.
“You’ve always done this?” I asked.
She nodded. “Yes.”
“Isn’t that dangerous?” I asked. “If Jake or Dad were to catch you…”
“There has always been a level of danger, yes. And I’ve been nearly caught more than once. But I can’t give up, not when there are so many people depending on the information I provide.”
“Information you did provide,” Claire pointed out. “You’ve basically blown your cover now.”
“Yes,” Ruth said. “But it was worth it to save my daughter from that place.”
My heart warmed with a mother’s love. I still wasn’t sure of it. I’d been hurt so many times before. But, I wanted to believe in her, that she could love me as much as she was saying she did.
“Why would you put yourself at risk?” I asked. “Mom and Dad gave you a good home. Did you ever think of just… turning to their side?”
“I was tempted at times,” Ruth said. “But whenever I grew weak, I remembered what I was doing this for and my resolve strengthened.”
“Why were you doing it?” I asked.
“Love,” she said simply, her eyes somewhat distant as she seemed to travel to another time and place. I wondered who she was thinking about, and if she would even tell me if I asked.
“Love is a foolish reason to do anything,” Claire said.
“I agree,” Ian replied. “Love is for fools.”
As I lowered my head, some hurt finding its way into my chest, Ruth snapped her attention to Ian. “You do not deserve my daughter’s love.”
Ian huffed a harsh laugh. “Well you are just a hypocrite, aren’t you? Here you are protecting some rogue lover, but condemning me. At least I’m not an outlaw. I have a home and a reputation. I have a life outside of illegal acts.”

“Your love isn’t real,” Ruth said flatly. “That alone makes you lesser than those you ridicule.”
“Ruth, please,” I said. I really didn’t want to talk about this. My heart was still sore from earlier, I wasn’t ready to face even more hurt and pain from this discussion.
“The love I hold for my lover is real, while you are playing pretend,” Ruth continued, ignoring my plea. “You don’t really love her.”
“That’s enough,” I said. “I won’t have you talking to him like that. The way you are saying these things, it’s like you don’t believe I am worthy of love at all.”
