Chapter 421
I could tell she wanted to believe me. But I could also tell, perhaps on a motherly intuition, that she simply… couldn’t. Her fears and insecurities were so strong that she couldn’t break through them.
Fresh tears fell from her eyes, and now mirroring tears fell from mine as well.
I hated so much that she was hurt. I hated that I was part of that pain.
But there was little I could do about it now but share in her sorrow.
Sienna and I cried together on the couch for some time, until she asked me to be alone. Out of respect for my daughter, I gathered the supplies I had been going through and retreated to my private room.
Closing the door, I had meant to stay in for the night. A woman of my age needed more rest than most. However, no sooner had I started to prepare for bed, then my phone chimed with a message.
Not many cared to have my number, and fewer still would send me a message this late into the evening.
Moving toward my phone, I lifted it.
We need to meet. Tonight.
Sienna’s POV
I so desperately needed someone – anyone to love me. Ian, I couldn’t trust.
—
But Ruth…? I had no reason to doubt she was really my mother, and as such, it made sense for her to feel some affection toward me.
It was difficult to get over her leaving me though. Even with her assurances she just wanted a better life for me, if she truly loved me, wouldn’t she want me to stay with her?
I didn’t know, and I was so emotionally wrought that I couldn’t really handle the thoughts anymore.
Truly, I just wanted to go to bed and forget this whole day existed.
My foolish heart continued to hold on hope that maybe Ian really did fall asleep. Maybe tomorrow, everything would be better. If I had his love, maybe I could accept Ruth’s too. Maybe then I could start to feel like I truly had value in this life, instead of someone who was just constantly pushed to the side.
Leaving the living room, I was going to go back to my room and try again tomorrow. Yet, just as I opened the door, I sensed movement behind me. Subtly I turned, seeing out of the corner of my eye as Ruth left her own room and silently moved toward the stairs.
Her footsteps were so soft that she didn’t make a single noise. If I hadn’t been looking, I wouldn’t have even noticed she had left.
As it was, I hadn’t been the only one who noticed. Claire was just stepping out of the bathroom and spotted Ruth sneaking up the stairs. We both watched, waiting for her to disappear out of sight, before we looked at each other.
“Where could she be going?” Claire asked.

I shrugged, truly having no idea. “She told me she was retiring for the night.”
“Like hell she was,” Claire said. She looked between me and the stairs again. “I’m going after her.”
